'WELCOME TO SWEETIE PIE'S' RETURNS TO OWN

Sweetie Pie's

Acclaimed soul food chef and Sweetie Pie’s restaurant owner Miss Robbie Montgomery and her family have returned to OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, for another lively season of the Pilgrim Studios-produced, NAACP Image Award-winning docu-series “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s.”

In an all-new season, Miss Robbie and her son, Tim, prepare to expand their restaurant empire beyond St. Louis with a new location on historic Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Getting the restaurant together is no easy task as they prepare to renovate the new location and find staff to train in time for the summer rush. Meanwhile, back in St. Louis, Tim struggles with planning the move to Memphis while continuing to manage the local restaurants, and hires a new district manager, Ma’ri, who quickly implements change and starts ruffling the staff's feathers. As if Miss Robbie’s plate wasn’t full enough, she’s also moving ahead with launching her new Sweetie Pie’s Sweet Tea line. It’s all systems go as this family works hard to expand their brand – one recipe at a time.

FAMED HOLLYWOOD KATE MANTILINI'S CLOSES DOORS

****
THE GLORIOUS CORNER

Story By: G. H. HARDING
****

Mel Brooks

KATE’S CLOSED --- From Deadline, “It not only was perhaps the most consistently popular and cool restaurant in Beverly Hills, Kate Mantilini which is located at the corner of Wilshire Blvd and Doheny and just two blocks from the headquarters of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, has in recent years become a key part of Oscar campaigning. Sadly, due to a dispute over higher rent with a greedy landlord more interested in lining their pockets than in pleasing Hollywood, Kate’s closed its doors Saturday night after 27 years in the key BH location. The other Kate’s located in Woodland Hills remains open, but frankly it isn’t the same. This one was special.”

"The restaurant, founded in 1987 and owned by the Lewis family (Marilyn and Harry who also founded the famed Hamburger Hamlet chain and sons David, and Adam who has been running it since 2010) which is open late unlike just about every other place of its type in the area, became a real watering hole for many Hollywood types like Mel Brooks who has written his own obit for the place, and so many others. It was almost impossible to go in there and not run into someone you know. It was really a hopping place, both at lunch , dinner and late night. And it not only has been host to numerous premiere parties (including several for Matt Weiner and Mad Men, a Marilyn Lewis obsession) it was also prominently featured in the movie Heat with a key scene between stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, now memorialized on the walls of Kate’s.”

When I used to be in L. A. on a more regular basis, Kate’s was usually my first stop. Its food was great all around, especially their tortilla soup and mac and cheese concoctions. Along with the now-closed Chasen’s, and Dan Tana’s, and, now Craig’s … this was southern-L. A. dining at its best. Sad news indeed.

D'ONOFRIO CAST --- Vincent D’Onofrio, so good for so many years at Detective Robert Goren in Law & Order/Criminal Intent, has signed on to play the Kingpin in the new Netflix's live-action TV series Daredevil.

Last week, Marvel announced that D'Onofrio, will play Michael Fisk, aka Kingpin, the arch nemesis of Daredevil.

Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil is one part of the companies' long-term business venture into the live-action realm of superhero TV shows. D'Onofrio is bringing with him a large body of past respected work that could propel the series and the character of Fisk even more.

Now that D'Onofiro has been cast as Fisk, along with Charlie Cox in the title role of the series, the future of the man without fear appears to be looking bright.

CLOSING NOTES --- The sad story of legendary Casey Kasem officially came to an end yesterday, on Father’s Day, as he passed. So much mis-information came from this case, a book and maybe movie must certainly be the next logical step.

In his goodbye to radio fans in 2009, Kasem said, "Success doesn't happen in a vacuum. You're only as good as the people you work with and the people you work for. I've been lucky; I've worked for and with the very best."

Radio's All Access publisher Joel Denver noted, "Casey’s death marks the passing of one of the truly innovative radio personalities of our time. He brought to life the magic of American Top 40 to millions for years, and with that show, he created an indelible and beautiful spotlight on the importance of music and radio for generations of listeners. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Casey when we both recorded our respective shows and he was always a gentleman, who had a big and caring heart. Rest in peace, Casey."

Classy move by Elton John dedicating "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" at this weekend's Bonnaroo festival. Elton closed the festival.

VISIONARY PETER GABRIEL BACK TO 1986 ALBUM

****
THE GLORIOUS CORNER

Story By: G. H. HARDING
****

Peter Gabriel

GABRIEL’S BACK TO FRONT --- Regulars readers know how I feel about Peter Gabriel; visionary, eclectic, passionate … I have always held him the highest esteem. His most recent tour was again, an interesting proposition. He’d be performing, in full, all the music from his ground-breaking 1986 album. So in typical Gabriel-fashion, he re-assembled the band from that album which included, in addition to regulars David Rhodes and bassist Tony Levin, keyboardist David Sancious (Bruce Springsteen) and drummer Manu Katche on drums.

The concert has now been released on DVD from our co-horts at Eagle Rock Entertainment and immediately becomes the live-concert disc of the year.

The concert begins with Gabriel, at an acoustic piano, performing a new, uncompleted song, called “Daddy Long Legs.” Hearing Gabriel essentially solo, with just dulcet accompaniment from Levin’s bass is extraordinary. What other artist would open a show, performing a new, unfinished song? Besides being a terrific new-song, just hearing him alone is breathtaking. He also performs another song sans band, his wonderful “Come Talk To Me.”

Immediately after, the band enters, plugs in and so begins the music from So, which again is pure visionary music. Hearing this album all these years latest presents fascinating portrait of the artist, who was still fabricating his solo work. It’s just so interesting to me that in so many of his songs, you can still detect his participation in his former band, the Behemoth Genesis. In songs like “Shock The Monkey,” “Digging In The Dirt,” and especially “Secret World,” his unique persona just breaks through. In “World,” the band just dazzles and is perhaps the best track in the show. Picture this: In the center of the stage is a huge bulls eye and with a camera shot from above, the entire band at one point positions themselves facing up to the camera … in effect up. With lights flashing; huge robotic arms with cameras mimicking the movements the band, the only available space is up … a typical, yet amazing move from the artist.

The band is amazing. Levin is his usual reliable, creative essence with his array of basses and different picking techniques. Years ago, Levin taped what looked like large plastic straws to his fingers and plucked his bass which created the most delicious aural effects. Rhodes, who Gabriel revealed wanted to be a sculptor, now sculpts with sounds. He and Levin represent Gabriel at his bets. Sancious, who Gabriel said hails from New Jersey and lived on E street is phenomenal. He also plays acoustic guitar on “Monkey” and reveals himself to be every bit as inspiring as on keys.

We also loved “Red Rain,” “Solsbury Hill,” “Don’t’ Give Up” and his massive solo hit “Sledgehammer.” A brilliant concert from start to finish … one of the best I have ever seen.

If you're a Gabriel fan, this is a must have.

ONCE FOR THE FIRST TIME --- Once is a 2007 Irish musical film written and directed by John Carney. Set in Dublin, Ireland, the naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Collaborators prior to making the film performing under the stage moniker The Swell Season, Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all of the original songs in the film.

The film was successful, receiving enthusiastic reviews and awards such as the 2007 Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film. Hansard and Irglová's song "Falling Slowly" won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the soundtrack as a whole also received a Grammy Award nomination.

Once, the musical stage adaptation is based on the 2006 film of the same name. The book was written by Enda Walsh, retaining many of the songs written by Hansard and Irglova’s, including the Academy Award-winning "Falling Slowly". The musical premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2011, before transferring to Broadway in 2012.

The production received eleven 2012 Tony Award nominations, and won eight of those awards including Best Musical, Best Actor, and Best Book. The musical also won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It has since spawned a London production, with a US Tour running from October 2013 to September 2014.

In the musical, the cast also serves as the orchestra. A minimalist set is used, including a bar in center stage with chairs lining stage left and right. Exiting cast members simply step to the side of the stage and sit down. They serve as the orchestra from these chairs. The bar is used before the show and at intermission as a working bar for theater patrons. We caught the show this week and absolutely loved it; in fact, it immediately ranks as one of the best musicals ever we've ever seen.

Paul Alexander Nolan’s portrayal of Guy is truly moving, plus he’s a terrific vocalist. Laurel Griggs as Ivanka is equally stunning.

The music’s terrific as well, especially “Gold” and the award-winning “Falling Slowly.” I'm a bit chagrined that I didn't catch this show earlier, but I cannot recommend it enough.

CLOSING NOTES --- We walked into Ian Schrager’s newly-renovated Paramount hotel on West 46th street in NYC and was greeted by their new lobby DJ playing Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover.” Besides being dazzled by the visual aspect of the new room, we have always loved that song. Brilliant re-design for sure, although we do miss the colored lights in the elevators …

We neglected to mention how much we loved Sting's performance of his Last Ship, from his play of the same name opening in the fall. Honestly, it reminded us of his album Soul Cages released in 1991. Early reports, from Chicago, are that the show is terrific. Congrats Mr. Sumner ...

COLE RUMBOUGH PLAYS SIRIO MACCIONI'S LE CIRQUE

****
NEW YORK CITY'S BEST PICK
****

Cole Rumbough

Hurry up and make your reservations for May 19th at 7 pm to hear Cole Rumbough and his jazz trio perform at Sirio Maccioni's Le Cirque Cafe at 151 East 58th Street.

The 23 year old crooner's "musical charms are a throwback to the good old days of elegance, sophistication, and glamour," according to two-time Tony award winning actress, Christine Ebersole. As Dina Merrill's grandson, Cole knows a thing or two about elegance. "I grew up with music all around me and my grandmother's dinner parties always had Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald playing in the background, if not a live jazz quartet." Even her party guests included celebrated icons such as Tony Bennett. Now it's Cole's time to continue the tradition and make sure the Great American Songbook thrives. Cole Rumbough has been singing at Le Cirque regularly since October and even made his debut at The Metropolitan Room this past February. After Cole performed "Pour L'Amour du Chocolat," his original composition that has become his signature crowd pleaser at Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland last week, Liza Minnelli then expressed her approval with a congratulatory handshake. Bring a date and find out what all the buzz is about on May 19th. Call (212) 644-0202 for your $38 prix fixe, 2 course dinner reservations at Le Cirque Cafe. KAT GRAHAM AND KATE HOLT'S VAMPIRE NIGHT

Heather McDonald

Kat Graham With Claire Holt

Kat Graham, Claire Holt, Heather McDonald, & Dorothy Wang stopped by City Tavern Downtown LA, within the downtown destination FIGat7th over the weekend. Everyone was dressed casually chic and came to enjoy time with their families and close friends prior to heading out to events in the Downtown LA area.

Kat Graham visited the restaurant with her mother and stylist, Maeve Reilly. Graham and Reilly were overheard discussing the upcoming Met Gala and the $10,000 jump in ticket prices while munching on City Tavern favorites such as Deviled Eggs, Fresh-shucked Oysters, and a Charcuterie and Cheese Slate. An ecstatic Graham flew out of her seat when she spotted her former Vampire Diaries co-star Claire Holt at the restaurant. They gushed about each other’s outfits before sitting down at their respective tables. Holt arrived with her sister and a friend. They engaged in lighthearted, relaxed conversations while enjoying specialty cocktails and quick bites from the bar.

Heather McDonald also made it a family affair at City Tavern Downtown LA as she came with her husband, sons, and nephew. The family munched on Pork Belly Sliders and fries while the adults indulged in white wine and California craft draft beers from the bar.
