JEAN SHAFIROFF & RANDY JONES BOYCOTT PACQUIAO

Jean Shafiroff With Randy Jones

Manny Pacquiao
NEW YORK  - Today, LGBT NYC Brooklyn Community Pride Center Executive Director Floyd Rumohr and officials from New York City-based LGBT organizations held a press conference to announce a national and local boycott of this weekend's pro boxing match featuring welterweight Manny Pacquiao over his remarks about the LGBT community. Pacquiao was recently quoted as saying gay people were "worse than animals" and later read a bible verse that suggested gay people should be put to death. The rally opposing the fight and its sponsors was organized by LGBT rights advocacy groups and led by notable social activist Jean Shafiroff, author of the new book "Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give." The book contains a section on Manny Pacquiao's philanthropic work which Ms. Shafiroff physically tore out and tore up at the news conference held at the popular Manhattan nightspot Posh Bar & Lounge.

Jean Shafiroff With Randy Jones And Floyd Rumohr

The event featured inspiring commentary by Randy Jones, a member of the 1970's disco group The Village People and a gay rights advocate. Ironically, Pacquiao is known in the ring as "Macho Man" which is one of Jones' best-known hits. Pacquiao is an international hero in the sports world and has made a fortune by endorsing products and brands ranging from motorcycles, car batteries, pizza, beer, banks and real estate. The fight is expected to generate multi-millions in revenue and draw hundreds of millions of viewers world-wide. Posh Bar & Lounge is joining other gay sports bars in refusing to show the pay-per view telecast.

RHINESTONE COWBOY RANDY JONES & GLEN CAMPBELL

****
THE GLORIOUS CORNER

Story By: G. H. HARDING
 ****

Tim McGraw

MONEY MONEY MONEY --- Everyone knows we are in the era of declining album sales, but it's is hard to fathom just how into the red it has gotten.

To date, no album that has been released in 2014 has made it to Platinum status, indicating sales of over one-million units. As of now, only the soundtrack from Frozen, released in 2013, has sold more than one million copies this year.

Albums are making it to Gold level (500,000 units sold) including eleven released this year including Michael Jackson's Xscape and the 70's infused Guardian's of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Volume 1.

Where there is a lot of gold and platinum being awarded is in singles (aka individual track downloads). For veteran artists, much of this action is in country music with Tim McGraw, alone, receiving four platinum singles in the last three months.

Continuing sales of older tracks is also moving some over the thresholds, including Fishin' in the Dark by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band which was released on June 1, 1987 and has just received its platinum certification, and the Mighty Mighty Boss Tones' The Impression That I Get which has gone gold.

The big news, though, for older albums is that Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (released in 1977) has been given its twentieth platinum certificate, indicating sales of over twenty million units. That moves it into a tie for eighth place with Shania Twain on the list of the biggest selling albums of all-time in the U.S. The current Top ten are:

1. Their Greatest Hits - Eagles (29 million)

2. Thriller - Michael Jackson (29 million)

3. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin (23 million)

4. The Wall - Pink Floyd (Double) (23 million)

5. Greatest Hits Volume 1 and Volume 2 - Billy Joel (Double) (23 million)

6. Back In Black - AC/DC (22 million)

7. Double Live - Garth Brooks (Double) (21 million)

8. Come On Over - Shania Twain (20 million)

9. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac (19 million)

10. The Beatles (Double) (19 million)

Interesting to note, there’s no Taylor Swift; Katy Perry; Beyonce; or, event U2 in the list. Says vet-music biz gunslinger David Salidor, who operates his own PR/Mgmt. firm in Manhattan and L. A., “The business has swung from a singles market; to an album market; and, now back to a singles one. But, a good song is still a good song. The real money right now is in the live-arena … from heritage-type acts to Katy Perry. Radio remains the #1 forum to launch a new song and artist. Good music will always be here; but, the way one obtains it today is a bit different. Think of all the different platforms one now has for their music. In a way, the music business has never been better. ”

WHICH WITCH IS WHICH --- With a twitch of the nose and a little bit of magic, the beloved Bewitched is coming back. The comedy series, which ran from 1964 through 1972, is being revived and reformatted in a new take; and, the lucky winner is NBC.

This new series will center around Daphne, the granddaughter of Samantha Stephens (played by Elizabeth Montgomery in the original series) and the daughter of Tabitha Stephens (played by Lisa Hartman in the spin-off series in 1976).

Daphne is to be a single twentysomething witch who has always used her magical powers to conjure herself the perfect life, our source confirmed, but, the witch runs into a bit of trouble when she discovers she can't conjure up true love. Isn't that always the case?

The original series followed Samantha Steven, a witch who marries an ordinary man (Dick York, then Dick Sargent) and tries to live a magic-free life.

In 2005, Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell starred in a Nora Ephron remake that failed to enchant viewers.

Me, I always adored Agnes Moorehead on this show. I wonder if there'll have her character Endora?

Glen Campbell

ONE MORE FOR GLEN --- Glen Campbell's bittersweet final recording, “I'm Not Going to Miss You," has struck a chord with fans, sending the singer into the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in 33 years.

The track was recorded during Campbell's final recording sessions at a time when he was already suffering the effects of Alzheimer's disease, an illness that has now advanced enough that Glen can no longer record or tour. It comes from the soundtrack of the new documentary Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me; which is released today.

Debuting next week at number 90, the song actually has already charted better than his last Hot 100 single, 1981's “I Love My Truck,” which peaked at 96. Earlier that same year, his “I Don't Want to Know Your Name” went to 65. It's his 38th Hot 100 entry, including five top ten hits:

Wichita Lineman (1968 / #3)

Galveston (1969 / #4)

It's Only Make Believe (1970 / #10)

Rhinestone Cowboy (1975 / #1)

Southern Nights (1977 / #1)

Randy Jones

CLOSING NOTES --- Speaking of Glen Campbell - Thursday night, in rainy Manhattan at downtown Aleo restaurant, Randy Jones, from The Village People, serenaded Glen Campbell’s daughter with his version of her father’s “Rhinestone Cowboy.” Fete was for her new book, written with Mark Bego, called Life With My Father Glen Campbell (Overlook Press) ...

We lost Oscar De La Renta this week; even after designing the wedding dress for George Clooney's bride earlier this month. 50 nears on the fashion scene ... an amazing run. I had the pleasure of meeting him once and was immediately charmed by his gracefulness and charm. Rest easy Oscar ...

Have you seen the trailer yet for the next Avengers movie-coming in 2015. Its terrific, but James Spader, as the villain-Ultron is awesome. Someone posted of his charms "No actor projects intelligence and subtle power in his voice the way Spader does." Couldn't have said it better myself. Take a look.

U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and gay advocacy groups joined Federal Officials in a press conference announcing new tax laws affecting same-sex couples in New York State. Thousands of gay married couples will be filing taxes jointly this week for the first time in New York States history. Tax experts were on hand to give consumers advice on this new Federal requirement. The news conference took place outside the United States IRS Center, on West 44st Street in Manhattan.

Village People Legend Randy Jones was there and spoke how for the first time his partner of 30 years can file together. The icon even sang a short version of YMCA to the amazement of the crowd that gathered.

2014 will be the first time married gay couples file federal taxes together in the United States. It’s been a decade since Massachusetts became the first state to start granting marriage licenses, and some states previously accepted joint returns for state taxes; a few couples even got an filing extension last year and were able to submit their returns together in the fall. But until the Supreme Court struck down the federal prohibition against gay marriage in The United States v. Windsor last summer, the Internal Revenue Service didn’t recognize joint returns for married same-sex couples.

We would also like to say,  Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney is one politician we just adore. She works hard for New Yorkers and always does the right thing. We need more people in Congress like her.

GERALD MCCULLOUCH STARS IN BEAR CITY

TIMES SQUARE GOSSIP MOVIE REVIEWS

"BEAR CITY"

Gerald McCullouch's Performance Is Riveting!
****

Brian Keane With Gerald McCullouch And Joe Conti

We got a last minute e-mail from our good friend, CSI star Gerald McCullouch yesterday to come to his movie "Bear City" that was opening at the Quad Cinema in New York City last night. We thought it was quite funny that Gerald would play a bear, as we never looked at him this way. My definition of a bear in gay culture has always been a slightly overweight hairy man and there is no way Gerald matches this description, except he has a slight beard, which I always wish he would shave. But as I arrived at the famed movie house, I had to laugh. There were lines down the street of Gay Bears. It seems every bear in the Big Apple had to see this movie.

As I was waiting outside for my CSI Bear McCullouch, Village People legend Randy Jones arrived with Will Grega to catch the movie and all the memories the flick is sure to bring back to any gay man. I must say, Gerald McCullouch's performance is riveting. McCullouch will make you laugh and cry all in the same performance. His acting skills are top notch as he will take you through happiness and sadness all in the same scene.

"Bear City" has been selling out at festivals across the world and has become a festival favorite winning awards at OutFest and in Oslo, Norway. Variety called Gerald McCullouch "charming in the movie" and The NY Times said he was "rugged, randy and assured" It plays at The Quad thru Thursday Oct. 28th.

ABOUT BEAR CITY

It’s summer in New York City, and the neighborhood bears are coming out of hibernation. A group of friends is getting ready for the annual week-long celebration of all things bear, but plans keep getting turned upside down. BearCity is Queer As Folk meets Sex in the City — only with more hair and tons of hot bear-on-bear action!

Closet cub Tyler fantasizes about stuffing Santa’s stocking and finding a Daddy bear to do more than cuddle. But as he dives into the bear community, he finds that it can be hard for a hairless guy to get some fuzzy loving. Scene stealer's Brent and Fred are the maybe-not-so-monogamous couple who invite him to move in as they figure out how to spice things up.

Southern bear-belle Michael struggles to juggle his lover, his job search and his body image issues, but an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction might solve all three. Rakish Roger is the stud-about-town, and he’ll pretty much bang (on screen) anyone with facial hair. That is, until an awesomely awkward encounter at the local bowling alley challenges both his bowling prowess and his bear-loving mojo. Add to that some adorable eye-candy, an indispensable fairy-god-roommate, beer busts and “stroller meat,” and BearCity makes for a beartastic summertime romp.

REVIEWS FOR BEAR CITY

"A sweet and comic romp that is sure to delight furry and hairless alike." -On Top Magazine

"Bear culture meets Sex And The City in this ground-breaking romantic comedy!" -Gaylife.com

"BearCity is A DELIGHT. Plus, (the) education is priceless!" -The Stranger

CHRIS MULKEY AND THE BOARDWALK EMPIRE

Star Chris Mulkey

Model John Brand With Chris Mulkey

We had a great time at Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City the past few days. Besides club hopping with Village Peoples Randy Jones and our good friends Keith Collins and Theresa Galeani at Boogie Nights, we had a great time partying with Boardwalk Empire star Chris Mulkey. Just looking up Mulkey's credits on IMDB is like a who's who in television and movie history. This famed actor has done everything and to top it off, he has that old time star class, which is very hard to find these days.

As we sat down several nights in a row at our favorite watering hole The Irish Pub, just off the Boardwalk, Mulkey told me some interesting facts about the hit HBO series The Boardwalk Empire. First of all, he loves doing this show, which is great as you need to enjoy what you are doing in this business. Second, Mulkey told me the show is not filmed in Atlantic City but in studios in New York City. I was kinda of shocked. It seems that New Jersey would not give the show tax credits for filming on the famed Boardwalk, so they took it to The Big Apple, where they appreciate the film business. I really find this so stupid on New Jersey's part. First of all, Atlantic City like the rest of the country could use some more business. Tourists would flock to the hotels just to get a glimpse of these talented stars in action. The business generated would be huge and to think these stupid politicians would let a hit series like The Boardwalk Empire to be filmed elsewhere, is beyond reason. What were they thinking? The show is doing so good in the ratings, that it has been picked up for another season. I think it's time for New Jersey to wake up and become part of the Empire!

Randy Jones With Mr. Boogie

So much action is happening this time of year in Atlantic City, one of our favorite destinations. Since we were in the seaside mecca for a few days, we just had to hit our favorite hotspot Boogie Nights at the famed Resorts Hotel And Casino, So I packed up a few of my friends to take along. We grabbed 'A Fight For Survival' stars Keith Collins and Theresa Galeani and Village People's most famous cowboy Randy Jones who was in town performing, and we headed into the sunset to dance the night away. Boogie Nights is the ultimate 70's and 80's dance club every Friday and Saturday night. This is the place to be and I could think of no better place to bring Randy Jones who is a legend in his own time. Sometimes things just work out perfect and by chance. As we entered the club and made our way to the ultra VIP section, YMCA started playing to the packed house. The crowd went crazy when they realized Randy Jones was in the house. Not missing a beat, Randy promptly grabbed the mike and sang along with his most famous hit. Our hosts at Boogie Nights Enrique Soto and Danielle Calcagni really know how to throw a 70s and 90s bash!

The stars really came out for the "American Idol" Grand Finale 2009 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Paula Abdul looked stunning. The worlds famous and soon to be famous attended this great event. They included, David Archuleta, Jillian Barberie Reynolds, Bo Bice, Jason Castro, Daughtry, Janice Dickinson, Kara DioGuardi, Fergie, Heather Locklear, Nigel Lythgoe, Steve Martin, Country singing star Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and many other stars. This was one night for everyone to remember. Of course the huge shocker was when Kris Allen won. The sexy runner-up, 26-year-old Adam Lambert of San Diego, had been considered the most likely winner since nearly the start of the season. His performances and huge vocal range consistently won the best critiques from the judges while Kris, an assuming pop-rocker, flew under the radar for much of the season until last night.
