Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga was snapped arriving at the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in New York City yesterday. This superstar takes no back seat to anyone.

Story By: G. H. Harding
Jimmy Fallon

FALLON BUSINESS – As good as little Jimmy Fallon was Monday night on his Tonight Show debut Monday -and we’ll get to that in a minute- could you believe U2 performing their “Invisible” on the roof of 30 Rock; the so-called Top Of The Rock? Talk about precipitous … that roof is long and thin and though they had some amazing camera shots, drummer Larry Mullen sure didn't sit down … and Bono most definitely had his performing space somewhat reduced.

Granted it’s a great song, but the backdrop, literally the skyline of Manhattan, was sumptuous. OK, Fallon was good, but conspicuously low-keyed. Obviously overwhelmed, he surely opted to be kind and rather reverential. I've always liked Fallon and truth be told, he’s probably been the best choice for host since Carson. O’Brien was good, if a bit caustic, and, Leno (22 years!) was good, but ultimately too cornbread for my tastes.

Will Smith and Billy Crystal was terrific as well. Fallon’s talents let him attract a wider array of contemporary artists. He’s got the goods and will deliver. Welcome Jimmy!

SHANNON BACK? --- After an exile of just several weeks, radio-legend Scott Shannon is rumored to be returning to the airwaves monetarily. How is that possible? When a talent the stature of Shannon leaves a prominent post, usually they get paid to stay away for quite some time. Face it, WPLJ is a behemoth … so, a golden parachute would seem in order.

My sources tell me there was a clause in Shannon’s contact that provided for such a quick return. Meanwhile, Elliot Segal from WOR (of the original Elvis & Elliot team of years back) has departed that station after an impressive media push. His show lasted just under one-month with rather grim ratings. Wonder what the real story was here?

His show was indeed an odd fit book ended by conservatives Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Interesting considering the Shannon-news … do they pieces fit? Stay tuned.

FREE RODGERS --- Paul Rodgers has had a career that most would envy. In the 70's, he was the lead singer of Free and Bad Company. The 80's brought The Firm, the 90's was The Law and the 2000's included Queen + Paul Rodgers. Plus, throughout, the singer has had a very sensational solo career.

Now comes his latest solo effort, The Royal Sessions, recorded in Memphis with the musicians of Royal Studios which opened in 1956 and has recorded the likes of Al Green, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, Soloman Burke, Robert Cray and many more. Boz Scaggs’ most recent album, Memphis, was recorded there as well.

Rogers’ album is a treasure trove of classic soul compositions performed by one of the great voices of the rock era. Rodgers took the sessions very seriously and carefully chose songs that represented the sound of Memphis, covering Otis Redding, O. V. Wright, Albert King, Ann Peebles, Sam and Dave and many more. Where others have tried to recreate and pay tribute to the Memphis sound in the recent past, Rodgers has the pipes and the emotional delivery to truly make it happen.

The Royal Sessions has been received extremely well by the critics and the public alike with Rodgers scoring hits on both the Classic Rock Charts and, for the first time in his career, the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart where I Can't Stop the Rain is quickly ascending.

Adam Lambert

HERE’S ADAM --- Adam Lambert has joined a slew of famed celebrities to honor Elvis Presley in a special tribute book. On Monday he tweeted his excitement about the project: “Check this out! A photography project I'm a part of ! Such amazing company! @Chrisaphoto's Shades of Elvis!

The book, Shades of Elvis, is by Christopher Ameruoso and Priscilla Presley. It is a photography book that includes images of more than 75 different artists wearing/posing with a pair of Elvis's sunglasses. Featured in the book are: Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, Lionel Richie, Johnny Depp, Celine Dion, Rob Lowe, Ozzy Osbourne, and Elton John, among others.

CLOSING NOTES --- Looks for Monkees Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith to go on Howard Stern right before their convention in early-March. Stern’s a long-time fan and has addressed the issue of why the band is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I predict it'll be a game-changing interview …

Rock and roll designer John Varvatos has just started his own record label; through Monte Lippman’s Universal Records. Varvatos is a talented designer; his ads usually feature a music personality; Willie Nelson, Jimmy Page and Gary Clark, Jr., among is subjects. His New York-base is headquarters in the original location of Hilly Kristal’s CBGB's. This will be interesting to watch …

Talking about CBGB’s: Whatever happened to that movie? The movie premiered on DirecTV's video on demand platform DirecTV Cinema on September 5, 2013, and was available through October 2, 2013. It was shown at various times throughout the CBGB Music & Film Festival in New York City from October 9 through October 13, 2013, before a national release in select theaters beginning October 4, 2013. The DVD and Blu-ray were scheduled for release on December 31, 2013. I didn’t even see it advertised in a theater. Could it have really been that bad? With Alan Rickman, Johnny Galecki and, Malin Ackerman … really? …

Frankly, I'm surprised that Jay Leno hasn't yet guested on Letterman. To tell you the truth, I would have had him on the first opportunity. Anyway, Dave's show Monday night featured a veritable slew of stars: Kevin Spacey, Gary Clark, Jr., and, the entire cast of How I Met Your Mother. Powerhouse for sure...

Finally, just caught the first episode of NetFlix's House Of Cards second season ... wow is all I can say. Spacey, just devastatingly good.

Jimmy Fallon

SNL COMES ALIVE --- This weekend’s Saturday Night Live, was hosted by the formidable Jimmy Fallon (soon to inherit NBC's The Tonight Show come February) and the musical guest was Justin Timberlake. Fallon opened the show with a monologue about him singing with David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney … only, they couldn't make it, so the plan was to have him perform as each star. He did a pretty good Bowie, Dylan and then when he stepped into the McCartney slot, Macca himself walked on to thunderous applause to perform “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," with Jimmy; and, it was pretty good.

Also hilarious was the Barry Gibb Talk Show, with both Fallon and Timberlake and a surprise appearance by Gibb himself at the end. This was the first time the sketch was performed after the passing of Robin Gibb in 2012. Funny bit for sure, but memories of Robin and, for that matter, Maurice, still linger.

Interestingly enough, Madonna -in person- was one of the guests on the show and looked as if she couldn't have cared less about being there. At one point she reached in her pocked for her grill and put it in her mouth, much to the surprise of Jimmy and Justin. Shame on her!

Timberlake two’s songs were great. He had the biggest selling album of 2013 and seems to excel in every medium. On theWeekend Update segment, Fallon officially passed the torch to Seth Meyers who will replace him on his late night show and a cameo from Mayor Michael Bloomberg was great. Say what you will about Bloomberg, but he did NYC well and he was spot-on funny here.

I think my favorite sketch was “Baby It’s Cold Outside” performed by Fallon and Cecily Strong-who is quickly becoming my new favorite on the show. The take on this one, was what happens after the two get busy. Sure, the result is full of rom-com clich├ęs (men are only interested in sex! women are needy!), but it’s also charmingly done — and a happy ending for both (he was just afraid of commitment!) makes up for any eye roll-inducing lines. The way they looked at each other after the sketch spoke volume’s - charming for sure.

Not as stellar as Fallon’s last appearance on SNL, but, the show drew its biggest ratings in two years. Some critics have already posited that they should host the Oscar’s … great idea!

Interesting side bar: Jay Leno has been having unofficial talks with CNN about bringing his talk show to the cable station; and, in essence taking away some much needed hype for NBC about the Fallon-change. Deadline Hollywood termed it NBC’s Jay Leno problem!

CLOSING NOTES --- Just saw Ryan O’ Neal and pit-bull attorney Marty Singer on The Today Show talking about O’ Neal’s victory over one of the two Warhol-painted portraits of Farrah Fawcett. Singer didn't say one word, but, sitting there he looked like … well, a pit-bull. The University of Austin, her alma mater, claimed they owned it; and, were fed information from Fawcett's college boyfriend, a reality show producer and, her fired personal assistant. The trial lasted far longer than anyone thought and cost O'Neal a cool million.

O'Neal’s a complex personality; loved by many but derided as well. Loaded from well-placed real estate deals in L. A., he endures as the true survivor from his and Fawcett’s tumultuous relationship.Watching this interview earlier was like a O'Neal screen test … the kid’s still got it.

Record producer David Richards, who helmed a number of albums for Queen and David Bowie, died Friday morning in England after a long illness. David was the son of Bobby Richards who was an arranger for a number of artists including John Barry (who composed the music for many James Bond movies).

While working at Mountain Studios, Richards made hundreds of connections with artists and management and gained a lifetime of experience behind the board. He soon became an in-demand producer, helming such albums as A Kind of Magic, The Miracle, Innuendo and Made in Heaven for Queen, Never Let Me Down, The Buddah of Suburbia and Outside for David Bowie and Blah Blah Blah for Iggy Pop.

Jimmy Fallon

Kibbles ’n Bits released a new survey this week with some fun and corky celebrity stats:

Kibbles ’n Bits surveyed some celebrity-loving dog parents and asked them: If your pup had a voice, which celebrity would it sound like?

· Nearly one-third (35%) of those with female dogs think their canine would most sound like Whoopi Goldberg over other celebrities with distinct voices

· One quarter (26%) of those with male pups think their dogs would sound like Morgan Freeman

As far as talk show wars, dog parents had specific thoughts on who has the better dog voice:

· Over one-third (34%) think Jimmy Fallon would make a better voice for a dog than other present and past talk show hosts. Nearly one in four (22%) name Jimmy Kimmel as having this talent

· Almost a quarter (24%) of dog owners think that if they sounded like Regis Philbin, they might get their dogs most excited for mealtime over other celebs with standout voices. Far fewer chose Regis’ successor, Michael Strahan (9%). What would Kelly think?!

Dog parents also saw Golden Girl Betty White as the best doggie babysitter:

· If they had to choose a celebrity to care for their dogs for a day, (54%) of Americans would choose animal lover Betty White

Kibbles ’n Bits and Kelton Research have surveyed dog parents across the country for a national contest that launched Friday. The contest, “Capture Your Bits of Love,” features pet parents talking to the camera in their best “doggie voice.” The winner will receive $5,000 and a lifetime supply of Kibbles ’n Bits.

Jimmy Fallon

Jay Leno
GUESS WHO, DON'T SUE --- We had a dinner last night with someone who books the celebrity-personalities for one of the hottest new radio talk shows out there and we were completely dumbfounded by what he had to say about the competitive booking practices for radio and TV. We had heard for years about the trials-and-tribulations of being a Booker … but, we never completely thought it out … till the other night. This young man, who we certainly cannot name, started off by talking about the imminent arrival of Jimmy Fallon (replacing Leno) next year as the new host of The Tonight Show and how that will impact trying to get your artist or group on his show or on the Letterman show, for that matter. He said that up till now, The Late Show With David Letterman, or Late Night, had a solid lock on any booking procedures here in NYC. He said that now, with Fallon, they’ll be more of an equal or democratic footing for everybody. “The Late Show has two very, very talented ladies doing the music bookings, but if you can’t offer them an ad buy for the appearance, you’d best not even pitch it … or, even call. Face it, the advertising is what drives all these bookings.”  He continued, “The people over at Fallon, have been totally fair and honorable. An ad buy was great, but not necessary.”

He does wonder, that with Fallon being in prime time … will everything be somewhat amped up? “NBC’s had a terrible year … so, that thought will certainly be in the back of their minds when they book anyone. If anything, it might free up the Letterman-people to be a bit more open and amenable.” This fellow’s show is on radio, but even he’s had trouble generating marquee names. “We’ve been trying to get Dave Grohl for his Sound City movie and soundtrack and we’ve been consistently been shut down by his PR firm. I get that they want to get this best for him, but to think out of the box a bit, wouldn’t be a bad idea for anyone. The funny thing is that the host used to be in the music industry and the interview would have been terrific for him.” He went onto to explain that PR firms usually run interference, so even if he met Grohl tomorrow face-to-face tomorrow, Grohl would blame the firm. He continues, “The stars know that, it’s just a shame for their audience; if they knew, they’d be disappointed.”

Just this week he also had a problem with Paul Anka, who has a new book and duets-album out. “I’ve always been an Anka-fan and looked forward to having him. My radio fellow spent 45-minutes the other night discussing his talents and successes … and, then we were turned down by his PR-firm in L. A. But, we're going to keep on talking about him and how time couldn't be made for us. And, we're friends with his son-in-law Jason Bateman. So sad.”

It’s a nasty business and the competition is fierce.” After the Tonight Show being out of New York for 40 years, it will be an interesting phase.

DIY - MEET DIANE ARKENSTONE --- For multi-platinum selling recording artist Diane Arkenstone a renewed sense of freedom can be discovered by composing and performing contemporary music in one of her many well versed styles. Early in life she was blessed with the gifted abilities of a natural born artist and composer, which has led to many achievements during each phase of her music career.

Adaptable to a variety of music categories her natural talent and adaptability has never been more clearly pronounced than her new vocal instrumental album titled Union Road, just out on March 26th 2013.

The multi-talented Arkenstone is a popular artist most people will recognize, especially those who favor the Celtic, Native American, instrumental, new age, and world music categories. In addition to her own releases like the Billboard Charting Jewel in the Sun, and top radio chart recording, The Best Of Diane Arkenstone, she has also been a member of associated groups most people are familiar with.

On her newest effort, one track, “Corner of Nowhere” just knocked me out. Her delicate rhythms and off-beat instrumentation shone through. Performing acoustic guitar, dulcimer, kalimba and percussion, the album is a perfect songwriting talents as a vocalist and lyricist are on display, highlighting her capabilities as a contemporary singer with charming lyrical optimism on nine of eleven songs.

Jimmy Fallon

NBC Late Night host Jimmy Fallon was not laughing on Saturday night after he was thrown out of a pizzeria for giving its sister restaurant a horrible review. The famed comedian and host, along with his wife Nancy, and her brother and two children, headed to New York's Posto for a meal over the weekend. But the restaurant staff refused the star entry to the place because Fallon had previously criticized another restaurant in the chain, Spunto, claiming their food would "win a Ritz cracker pizza contest." A source tells New York Post's gossip column PageSix, "The hostess who asked him to leave was seemingly gleeful about it. Jimmy is never going back to Posto." And the move has infuriated Fallon, whose spokesperson tells the publication, "Jimmy never said anything negative about Posto. He even recommended Posto as a favorite restaurant in an upcoming magazine article -- though it's no longer one of his favorites. Rest assured he won't be going back."

We thought we were looking at the rain forest. Sorry...We really liked Jimmy Fallon's suit. His wife Nancy looked like a star herself. Scarlett Johansson was dressed to kill in a flowered outfit. Sexy newcomer Daren Kagasoff was also there but a little too casual for a star studded event. Justin long showed up with his look-alike brother, also very casual. Busy Phillips showed up and looked stunning and was not too busy to post for the celebrity snappers.
