The evening kicked off with Michael Milken and guest host Whoopi Goldberg outlining the evening’s three themes: Women in Science, Big Data, and Family. (“What do you think of Big Data?” asked Milken. “I don’t know, maybe I should spend some time with him,” quipped Goldberg). After a beautiful rendition of the national anthem sung by army veteran Constance Campbell, guests learned about the ways PCF supports young female researchers through the PCF Young Investigator program. The Big Data portion of the evening included a speech by Dr. David Shulkin, Secretary of Veteran Affairs, who was presented by Dr. Jonathan Simons, PCF President and CEO. The theme of Family was exemplified by the night’s honorees, Peter and Laurie Grauer, who were recognized for their commitment to cancer research and dedication to increasing the number of women in leadership positions, both in science and beyond. The evening concluded with a rousing performance by Grammy and Academy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, who sang hit songs including “Love You I Do,” “Spotlight,” “And I am Telling You,” and a Whitney Houston medley that got the crowd to their feet.

In the November 4 issue of JET magazine, the publication spotlights some of the most critically acclaimed films due to release this season, representing an array of established and up-and-coming Black actors, directors and producers.

T.D. Jakes graces the cover and discusses his new TV show, upcoming film and how he has utilized modern technology to reach the masses on a spiritual level. While he is nationally known as a spiritual leader, he has also gained recognition for producing popular African-American films such as Jumping the Broom, Sparkle and Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day.

“The great commission calls Christians to go into the world and spread the Good News,” says Jakes. “We can use television, we can use books, but there are more people in the theaters on Friday nights than the pews on Sunday morning.”

The media mogul dishes to JET about the latest medium added to his arsenal – a talk show. T.D. Jakes: Mind, Body & Soul, airing now on BET, uses celebrities and guests to address issues plaguing our community. But the ground breaking national platform isn’t his only big reveal. On Thanksgiving Day, Fox Searchlight will release Jakes’ film, Black Nativity, an adaption of Langston Hughes’ 1961 play, which stars Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Tyrese Gibson, to name a few.

In support of 12 Years a Slave hitting theaters on October 18, JET also features actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is garnering much Oscar buzz for his captivating performance as Solomon Northup, a free Black man kidnapped and sold into slavery.

“Against everything, the love and the passion that Solomon has for his family really spoke to me, and that’s what I really wanted to uncover,” says Ejiofor regarding his role in the film.

JET also highlights another actor on the verge of superstardom. The Spotlight section introduces readers to Skylan Brooks, known for his roles in iCarly and Our Family Wedding. The teen is gaining praise for his dramatic portrayal of Mister, a young man coping with the hardships of living with a drug-addicted parent in the film, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete.

“There were many hard stories that influenced me,” says Brooks on his preparation for the role. “I met kids with parents on drugs and they had to get away from that by going to facilities. They taught me so much. I did not know it was that bad,” he explained.

The film is directed by George Tillman Jr.; produced by Grammy winner Alicia Keys; and stars Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson.

The singer was spotted in New York looking amazingly fit in the newest pieces from her Jennifer Hudson Collection for QVC; however, has this weight loss given Jennifer more confidence? Hudson joked, “I’ve always been confident; don’t get it twisted. Big Jennifer would give Little Jennifer some competition!”

Superstar Jennifer Hudson's spokeswoman is dismissing gossip reports that she's pregnant with another baby. Jennifer was said to be expecting once again, just four months after giving birth to son David Jr. with her fiance, David Otunga. A source told Star magazine, "Jennifer was in total shock when she found out she was having another baby. She had wanted some space between the kids' ages. (But) she and David love kids. It's another thing for them to celebrate during the holidays." But Jennifer's press representative Lisa Kasteler is insisting to media outlets that there is not truth to the claims and instead of preparing for a new arrival, the singer/actress is preparing for a busy year ahead. She tells, "Contrary to what has been falsely reported, Jennifer Hudson is not pregnant. "Jennifer leaves in April for South Africa where she will portray Winnie Mandela in the feature film 'Winnie.' It is a commitment she is excited about and takes very seriously. "Jennifer is currently in the studio recording her second album and this is the only delivery she is looking forward to in 2010."

Jennifer Hudson

Singing icon Jennifer Hudson is coming under attack from the South African actors union after she was cast as the ex-wife of the country's former president Nelson Mandela in a new biopic. Jennifer is going to portray Winnie Mandela in South African filmmaker Darrell J. Roodt's new project "Winnie," about the famous politician's longtime spouse. When Jennifer landed the role, she said: "I was compelled and moved when I read the script. Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I'm honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told." Now Jennifer's new role is causing uproar among the members of the Creative Workers Union of South Africa, who insist a local actress should have been cast as the title character in a movie so important to the country's history. The Union's secretary general, Oupa Lebogo, even threatened to boycott the movie if Hudson's casting is not reconsidered. Lebogo says, "This decision must be reversed, it must be stopped now. If the matter doesn't come up for a discussion, we will push for a moratorium to be placed on the film." reports The Times Live. Protesters are also arguing Hudson's inclusion in the film project will hinder the country's development of its movie industry. Union president Mabutho Sithole tells The Citizen newspaper, "It can't happen that we want to develop our own Hollywood and yet bring in imports."

Talented singer Jennifer Hudson's new pregnancy was so easy, she often "forgot" she was expecting her son David. Jennifer and her fiance, David Otunga, welcomed their first child in August after months of pregnancy gossip floating around. Hudson never confirmed her happy news until the baby was born, and she is admitting it was easy to keep the baby a secret. She tells, "David and I were the only people who knew for a long time. I would forget I was pregnant, it was so easy. "I didn't have any morning sickness, no cravings either. I just thought, 'Oh, well, we'll wait until it'll tell on itself.' I didn't show until I was seven months so that made it easy right there." Hudson also reveals having a Cesarean section was not that painful. She says, "Everybody told me how much it was going to hurt afterwards but I think I have a different tolerance for pain than others. By that night after I had the baby, I'm like, 'Look, I can't sit in this bed anymore. I've got to get up!' I've been up and about since he was born. To me, the pain is no different than when you work out a muscle you've never worked out before and it's sore."
