CYNTHIA NIXON CALLS TO ABOLISH ICE ON THE VIEW

Cynthia Nixon On The View

New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon weighs in on Trump signing an executive order to keep migrant families together: "I am glad he has signed this executive order against himself, protecting them from him. I wish he would sign some more executive orders protecting us from him."

She calls to abolish ICE, saying the federal agency has "strayed so far from the interests of the American people and the interests of humanity — we need to abolish it."

She reacts the press' difficulties getting access to child detention centers, and compares it to coverage of the Vietnam War: "When you show people what's really happening, and the brutality and the injustice ... it's very hard to defend this kind of a policy."

"The problems that we have start at the top," she says of why she's running for governor, and discusses taking on Gov. Andrew Cuomo. "We're a Democratic state here ... but we've got a governor who hands over power to the Republicans and who has governed like a Republican."

Nixon shares her plan for education reform, saying "we need to invest in schools, not jails!"
Her plan includes fully funding K-12 education "without regard to the zip code, the property values in those areas and the skin color of the children who attend those schools."

Nixon talks the role her Sex and the City fame plays in her candidacy: "If the comparison is to Donald Trump, there's almost no overlap... I don't think celebrity is necessarily a bad thing in politics — it gives you a platform and it depends on what you do with that platform!"

She responds to those calling her qualifications into question: "When women run for office, celebrity or not, immediately their qualifications ... their motivations are questioned."

"We see women running for office across this country because they believe what I believe," she says. "If you really wanna bring change, we have to be the ones who are gonna bring it!"

NANCY PELOSI STATEMENT ON TRUMP ICE RAIDS

Nancy Pelosi

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Trump Administration conducted sweeping raids across Northern California that resulted in the arrest of more than 150 men and women, at least half of whom did not have a criminal record:

“The Trump Administration’s raids were a shocking abuse of law enforcement power. Yet again, the White House has reached into our communities to indiscriminately detain scores of hard-working, law-abiding immigrants.

“Fully half of those swept up in the ICE raids have no criminal record. This raid was intended solely to terrorize innocent immigrant families and instill fear in the hearts of our communities – not to keep Americans safe. Parents will now be torn from their children, and spouses ripped away from their loved ones.

“The Administration continues to brazenly target the cities that refuse to bow to its blatantly bigoted anti-immigrant and mass deportation agenda. The people of the San Francisco Bay Area will continue to oppose these cowardly attacks, and we will remain open to the patriotic immigrants who are the constant reinvigoration of America.”
