In a first for the magazine, the June issue of Woman’s Day, now on newsstands nationwide, features two real women who walked their way to weight loss success. Both Vanessa Herron and Tallena Johnson lost a combined 200+ pounds with simple, inspiring changes in their daily lifestyles.




Says Thousand Oaks, CA resident Vanessa Herron (left): “A doctor’s visit in February 2014 was my wakeup call. I was 242 pounds, prediabetic, and my blood pressure was sky-high. I knew it was serious, and I had to focus on getting healthy. The problem: I’m a working mom of four kids ranging in age from 14 to 22, so I have limited time. I thought about ways to fit activity into my day. I realized my daughter’s middle school was one mile away. So, I started walking her there instead of driving. At the beginning, I wasn’t able to keep up. I’d wave Brenda on and go back home. Each day, I went a little farther and was eventually able to make the whole trip. After four months, I was down 40 pounds and could walk without huffing and puffing. Today, my health measures are in normal ranges and I’ve shaken the ‘victim’ mentality. In other words, I felt like life was running me instead of me running my life. I now believe that if I can work hard enough to change my health, then I can apply that discipline to other areas. It’s been going well—I devote time each day to my novel and other writing aspirations!”



Says Fremont, NE resident Tallena Johnson (right): “When I was really heavy, I felt like people were staring at me, so I didn’t go into stores or restaurants by myself. I’d walk with my head down and avoid eye contact. My mom had a heart attack at age 41, when I was 19, and that was never far from my mind. On my 39th birthday in 2012, I hit 250 pounds and thought, I’m going to die if I don’t do something. So I set a goal to get under 200 pounds by age 40. I joined the Anytime Fitness gym near my house, but at first I could barely walk on the treadmill for 10 minutes. I didn’t want to overdo it and get frustrated, so I decided to add just 1 minute of walking each day. After 20 days, I was up to 30 minutes of walking and the pounds were consistently coming off. If I couldn’t make it to the gym, I’d stroll around town with my then teenage daughters, Kayla and Kendra. Now, I feel like I am turning heads—in a good way. I hold my head up high with my shoulders back, I smile and make eye contact. I try to radiate positivity.”

· MAKE A REALISTIC RESOLUTION


Decide on a few realistic fitness goals for yourself – challenge yourself to strengthen your upper body, tone your abdomen, improve your running time or lose 10 lbs by this summer. Write them on a piece of paper and carry them with you. This little reminder will help you stay on track and keep you from reaching for an unhealthy snack.




· SWEAT BEFORE YOU SLEEP


Whether you are supplementing your workout routine or need to jumpstart a new one, adding 20 minutes of cardio activity to the end of each day will give your metabolism an extra boost to keep working while you sleep, helping you burn off the day’s extra calories. Jog around your neighborhood; take a spinning or boot camp class at the gym or even jump rope at home. Added bonus: exercising in the evening will also help clear your mind, relieve stress and keep you away from tempting desserts.

Thelonious Johnson, better known as T.J., is a triple threat as an actor, model and fitness expert. Named one of 2008’s Most Eligible Bachelors by Extra, T.J. has established himself in many arenas, proving to be a sought-after actor while helping motivate and train individuals, such as CNN’s Anderson Cooper, to reach peak levels of fitness.



As a model, T.J. has been featured in leading publications such as Vogue Italia, Details, and on the cover of Maximum Fitness. His acting highlights include the Capcom viral video for popular video game, Bionic Commando, roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, One Life to Live, All My Children, Nova: Mind Over Money and the off Broadway production of Bell Flower Sessions. He was also featured in nationally syndicated commercials for Old Spice Hair & Body Wash and Gillette. Most recently, T.J. appeared as himself on Bravo’s Pregnant in Heels in 2012.

Have you ever wondered how pop stars stay in shape? Don’t worry it’s not as hard as it may seem, because, guess what -- they’re just like us!


Multi-platinum-selling UK girl group, The Saturdays, (who are recording their fourth album in the US), have less than traditional methods when it comes to staying in shape. When you have 11 top ten singles and three top ten albums, you must be doing something right!


For starters, the girls are all dog-crazy. With 10 dogs in total between the five girls, you can imagine how many times a day they’re taking their beloved pooches for a brisk stroll down Hollywood Blvd or a quick jog down the boardwalk. As Frankie would say, 'pugs not drugs!'

The girls sneak as much cardio into their daily lives as possible. While planning Rochelle’s wedding, the girls were spotted running all around London for the big day. From cake tastings (just one bite of course) to dress fittings, the girls were on the go go go! Thank god they had worked up the stamina to keep up with their pals, One Direction on the dance floor at the reception. "My wedding was the best day of my life. It was lovely all my friends and family there. Harry and Niall spent the night going crazy on the dance floor".


Una is the only one of The Saturdays who has a baby. You can imagine what it takes juggling being a first time mom and a working professional. Want to know why all the girls have great arms? They pass baby Aoife Belle around in between photo shoots and she is always in someone’s arms. “Aoife has been loving life in LA so far, she's already a Beverley Hills fashionista" -Una

 
With Mollie being the world’s #1 Britney Spears fan, the girls are constantly dancing through fittings and in between recording sessions. "I've been to see all of Britney's tours and it's always been my dream to meet her. She's been amazing on the X Factor USA – I've been watching every week while we've been over here in America" -Mollie


Over the weekend the girls were spotted getting their Zen on as they were captured attempting warrior pose. Escaping for an hour to the Westside, the girls were able to finally slow down from their busy lives and just breathe!


So see?! Even if your day is as jam packed as The Saturdays, there is always a way to squeeze in a little exercise while spending quality time with your loved ones and breaking it down to Britney Spears.

• Mix things up! “Lady Gaga's stage routine is vigorous, but her body has already adapted to these movements,” said Katrina and Karena. “In order to mix things up, we recommend a 20 minute high-intensity interval training routine. It’s quick, challenging, and effective. These work outs will keep her energy up for the next show!”

Kym Johnson of “Dancing with the Stars” fame will host a new celebrity fitness tabloid-style show “StarFit” premiering August 10 on the BeFit channel. Johnson will feature a variety of celebrity guest stars teaching viewers about their personal workouts.

The premiere episode will feature guest star Brian Orosco, the famous free runner from “American Ninja Warriors” who will use his renowned agility and flexibility to teach viewers an exhilarating parkour workout.
