The War on Drugs is Immoral and Ineffective

The War On Drugs

Despite increased efforts, manpower, and resources, the war on drugs has been a resounding failure. W.C. fields once quipped, “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.” Not only does the government continue to fail in its crusade against drugs, it continues to perpetrate a policy of immense immorality. It has been over forty years since President Richard Nixon declared war on drugs. What do we have to show for it? The United States has wasted over one trillion dollars, caused incarceration rates to exceed that of the Gulag Archipelago under Stalin, discriminated heavily against African-Americans, propped up the drug cartels, and allowed drug profits to flow into the pockets of al-Qaeda and other such terrorist groups.

The biggest success in the war on drugs has been the protection of drug cartel’s profits. In a standard legalized business, there are countless importers and exporters of a particular good. However, due to drug raids and seizures, the price of maintaining an operation has been driven up, forcing out small time distributors. This allows the only viable distributors to be those with enough money and resources to avoid interdiction efforts. These are the highly violent drug cartels that are flush with cash. By keeping goods out and arresting local distributors, the government keeps the price of these drugs up. What else could a monopolist want?

The production of drugs can be a very inexpensive endeavor when it is not necessary to take immense precautions to avoid interdiction. Thomas Sowell, the Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, asserts that “if a user could support his habit for a few dollars a week, he would still be an addict, but would not have to steal, mug, or murder to support his habit.” Zealots are unable to realize that they are not God. They possess neither the license nor the capacity to dictate how others live.

Drug enforcement agencies like to dazzle the public with their alleged high rates of drug seizures. American law enforcement confiscated approximately 1.5 million kilograms of marijuana in 2007, up 30% from 2002. Their efforts were even better with cocaine. They seized 50% more in 2007 than in 2002, a colossal 150,000 kilograms of cocaine. However, a 2011 study published in the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies indicates that “despite these outstanding numbers, only an estimated 41.5% of all cocaine and 25% of all marijuana was intercepted globally in 2007. Consequently, interdiction efforts have failed to effectively dismantle the drug industry. Experts believe that seventy percent of a drug needs to be intercepted worldwide to substantially reduce the size of the industry.” In addition, the percentage of drugs intercepted is likely inflated due to the inability to account for the amount of drugs that are smuggled in undetected.

Experts indicate that in order to make an appreciable difference, confiscation would have to be doubled. Furthermore, interdiction spurs what experts refer to as a “balloon effect”. This posits that when confiscation efforts are expanded in a certain area, the producers simply change locations. When interception efforts increase in one region, production merely moves to another region, which, as a result, makes seizure operations ineffective.

The Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies study goes on to state, “Another fundamental problem of interdiction is that it actually increases the profits of, and therefore the violence within, the industry.” The working theory of enforcement agencies is that reducing the supply of drugs will force costs up and push usage down. This is naive and misguided. The reality is that the drug supply is generally inelastic, meaning that due to the addictive nature of drugs, demand is not increased or decreased significantly when price fluctuates.

It was obvious what she was after. I remember thinking, 'God, Kate Moss just asked me for cocaine.'"Then she and some mates disappeared into a back room and when she came back she was bouncier than ever. It was obvious she was on something."The mother-of-one was previously exposed as a drug user two years ago when she was pictured snorting what appeared to be cocaine, but has since revived her modelling career with new contracts with Louis Vuitton, Donna Karan and Virgin Mobile.

LINDSAY LOHAN MOVIE STILL ON SCHEDULE

The producer of LINDSAY LOHAN’s next movie insists the project is "still on schedule" despite the actress’ recent drink-driving arrest.The Mean Girls star was arrested in Los Angeles on July 24th and charged with driving under the influence - for the second time in two months - and possession of cocaine. But producer Lucas Jarach is confident Lohan’s legal woes won’t affect upcoming film Dare To Love Me. He says, "The shooting of the movie, the filming, is not scheduled to start until October 1. Lindsay is still on board. We stand behind her."

Lindsay Lohan has been charged on suspicion of DUI (driving under the influence), possession of cocaine and driving with a suspended licence, just a week after checking out of rehab.The 21-year-old actress - who recently completed a 45-day program for alcoholism - was stopped by police in Santa Monica, California, at around 2.15am on Tuesday. Police were responding to a call about a car chase involving two vehicles. Officers have confirmed that Lindsay was driving two companions in the pursuing car.The star - who is currently facing a separate DUI charge after crashing her car in Beverly Hills in May - was taken to a Santa Monica jail after failing a sobriety test. Another search at the station found cocaine in her pants pocket, and her breath test recorded a blood alcohol level of between .1.2 and .1.3. Lindsay was subsequently charged with the three offences.The actress' bail was set at $25,000 and she left the station at around 9am on Tuesday morning.The news comes just days after the star - who has been wearing an alcohol-monitoring ankle device since leaving rehab - surrendered herself to Beverly Hills police and was formally booked for DUI following her car crash in May.Lindsay arrived at the station with her lawyer last Thursday and was released on $30,000 bail an hour later. A court date was set for August 24.

COCAINE LINDSAY LOHAN GETS ARRESTED

The 'Mean Girls' star, who recently completed her rehab program for alcoholism, has been formally booked for DUI (driving under the influence) following her car crash in May. Lindsay arrived at the station with her lawyer at 4.15pm and was released on $30,000 bail an hour later.The 21-year-old star was only booked yesterday because at the time of the accident she was cited - not formally arrested - due to the injuries she sustained in the incident. A court date has been set for August 24. Lindsay crashed her car on Sunset Boulevard on May 26, and a useable amount of cocaine was reportedly found inside the vehicle, although police could not determine who the drug belonged to. Meanwhile, Lindsay's movie career could be in jeopardy as some Hollywood studios are said to be wary of working with her. She was due to start shooting 'Poor Things' alongside Shirley MacLaine after leaving rehab, but set designer Fontaine Beauchamp Hebb revealed the film had been cancelled last week. Hebb wrote in an email: "'Poor Things' has been cancelled. Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news, but I just received a call from producer Jacky Gilardi pulling the plug on the ill-fated film. Apparently, Ms. Lohan's antics in Las Vegas over the weekend have scared the bond companies and all of the funding has been pulled."Insurers are said to be worried Lindsay - who is wearing an alcohol-monitoring device around her ankle and reportedly taking daily drug tests - won't tone down her wild lifestyle and could arrive late to the set. 'Poor Things' producers declined to comment on the cancellation of the movie.

He was told to enter rehab or face a jail sentence after being found guilty of possession of crack cocaine, popular club drug ketamine, heroin and cannabis in May. Pete - who was recently dumped by fiancée Kate Moss - also confessed to driving without a licence and failing to appear in court. District Judge Davinder Lachhar deferred sentencing until August 7 so his rehab stay can be reviewed.The 28-year-old musician's lawyer Sean Curran revealed Pete's £3,000 (U.S. $6000.) detox program would begin on Monday adding: "Pete has been in Harrogate over the weekend but I believe he is now back in London."Pete's bandmate Mick Whitnall was also driven to the Harrogate clinic yesterday.

Police officers then arrested her a few days later. Soon after the incident, Lohan checked into rehab at Malibu's Promises Center, where she recently opted for an extended care program. Lohan's lawyer Blair Berk said: "It's highly inappropriate for me to discuss a pending case. It is extremely unprofessional for law enforcement to do it."

Pete agreed and Lea claims he injected himself with cocaine at least three times between 1.30am and 4am. Lea says she asked Pete if reports were true that he had married Kate. She told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Pete said, 'No, I love her but I wouldn't marry her if she was the last woman on Earth.
