Jennifer Garner

E! NEWS -- Ben Affleck and ex Jennifer Garner are continuing to co-parent their three children and spent Christmas together as a family.

The actors, parents of daughters Violet, 12, and Seraphina, 8, and son Samuel, 5, had announced in 2015 they had made the "difficult decision to divorce" following 10 years of marriage. Both Affleck and Garner filed divorce papers this past April. Since their initial split, they have made it a priority to co-parent their kids and have often spent time all together as a family, celebrating multiple holidays and taking trips.

"Ben and Jen spent Christmas together with friends and family," a source told E! News exclusively on Wednesday. "They were in Montana. They spent the weekend together, and the family had a great time."

"Ben is continuing to work hard on himself, and is taking many different steps that will allow him to be the best father possible," the source said, adding that the actor is in "continual aftercare."

In March, Affleck revealed he had "completed treatment for alcohol addiction." In July, the actor exited the movie Triple Frontier to "take some time to focus on his wellness and his family." He continued outpatient treatment. In November, an insider told E! News that Affleck "a place right now where he is very committed and wants to see this through."

Both Garner and Affleck's girlfriend and SNL producer Lindsay Shookus, who he has been dating for several months, have supported the actor amid his journey to recovery.

The actor and Shookus were spotted on a dinner date at Nobu in Malibu on Tuesday.

"Ben and Lindsay are happy where things are and really enjoy each other's company," the source said on Wednesday.

Our Times Square Slider Turtles

Malibu, CA  –  American Tortoise Rescue, the international nonprofit sanctuary for turtle and tortoise protection, is asking that consumers no live animals, including turtles and tortoises, be purchased for holiday gifts.

According to Susan Tellem, co-founder of American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), while turtles and tortoises outlived the dinosaurs, illegal smuggling, habitat destruction, the commercial pet trade and live food markets in turtles and tortoises has devastated populations worldwide. Many once thriving species are now threatened or endangered. Worse, some are now extinct.

"The pet industry thrives on impulse buys of small, adorable exotic animals with a big price tag," Tellem says. "What we are recommending this holiday season is to avoid impulse buys. We understand the appeal of an adorable two inch baby tortoise,” Tellem adds, “But like most animal rescues, many rescues through the U.S. and Canada have many just as appealing turtles and tortoises ready for adoption to good homes.” She added that it is illegal to buy or sell any turtle under four inches long in the U.S. and has been since 1974.

Tellem gives five reasons why people shouldn’t buy a turtle or tortoise as a gift.

Turtles are boring for children. Kids will not find everlasting love in an animal that basically sits still most of the day sunning itself. Many kids tire of a turtle in a tank and don’t want to clean the habitat and change the water. Turtles and tortoises poop, Tellem reminds everyone.

Most turtles and many tortoises are already hibernating at this time of year. It’s unnatural for them to be awake and available for sale when they should be sleeping from about October through April. It’s cruel to sell wild animals that need to hibernate to stay healthy.

Turtles and tortoises confined in tanks are miserable. It’s like a human spending their entire life in a bathtub Tellem says. The only proper habitat for these animals is outside. The sun exposure helps maintain a healthy shell and is necessary for the animal to grow and thrive. During hibernation, most reptiles can stay outside in shelters that are dry and predator proof.

Adoption is the ideal option, Tellem says. During the spring, when the animals awake, rescues help place them in good “forever homes” with proper habitats. In most cases, there is no charge to adopt, only the promise that the animal will be given exceptional care for the rest of its life.

Turtles can easily live 25 to 50 years or more and tortoises can top 100 years. An impulse buy without a thought to the future is not in the best interest of the animal. Plans need to be made in wills and with family members since the animals can outlive their owners. Most people don’t think about that when they buy a turtle or tortoise.

Tellem, who founded the nonprofit 27 years ago with her husband, Marshall Thompson, says, "Many owners assume that when the tortoise becomes a problem, zoos will take them. This is simply not true. Zoos are not interested in cast-off pets." She adds that a domesticated pet cannot be put back into the wild. It will die or introduce disease into an already precarious wild ecosystem. In many states, it is also illegal. Tellem says that the option of placing the animal with a rescue is not always the answer, as her sanctuary is full as are most others. The best solution is to find a compassionate adopter who is willing to give a proper “forever home” to the pet. There are many national rescue organizations listed on which can facilitate adoptions if people are interested in getting an animal.

One way to enjoy a turtle or tortoise without harming them is to give the perfect holiday gift – a one year adoption certificate of a special needs turtle or tortoise at ATR make a donation to a nonprofit like American Tortoise Rescue. “This allows us to facilitate rescues to other groups and care for the ones that are ill or have special needs. If a donor makes a $100 donation or more, we send them an adoption certificate featuring one of our permanent residents, and it’s good for one year. People enjoy that because they can care for the animal vicariously,” Tellem says.

American Tortoise Rescue, Malibu, Calif., is a nonprofit founded in 1990 to provide for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. For more information, visit and; contact: American Tortoise Rescue at; follow on Twitter and InstaGram @tortoiserescue and on facebook.

Quick facts

Turtles and tortoises outlived dinosaurs.

The commercial pet trade in turtles and tortoises has devastated populations worldwide.

Many once thriving species are now threatened or endangered. Worse, some are now extinct.

Editors Note: We have three sliders now for almost 9 years. They are a lot of work, they are expensive, as filters have to be replaced, buy dry shrimp, pellets etc. Tank has to be cleaned and it can smell bad. So if you are not into a long term deal, do not get. As much as we love them, I feel bad they do not have a life in the wild. They are also very smart, they know their owners.

John Schneider

Tom Wopat
JOHN SCHNEIDER and TOM WOPAT – the original stars of “The Dukes of Hazzard” – will release a special holiday album Home for Christmas to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the iconic TV show. The recording will be available from D13 Entertainment in stores and online October 28. The pair, currently starring in a national TV advertising campaign for, have performed in concert over the years, but this marks their first full recording together. Mixing immediately recognizable Christmas standards with lesser-known holiday songs, the album combines a bright and brassy big band, lush strings, and rustic country sounds and laces it all together with humorous banter that reflects over three decades of friendship. Home for Christmas is produced by David Finck with arrangements by John Oddo, Tedd Firth and Rob Mounsey.

The duo will celebrate with an exclusive CD release concert at New York’s Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater on Tuesday, December 2 at 9:30 PM. This concert marks their first time performing together in the city.

Home for Christmas is a collection of swinging seasonable treats to get you ready for holiday cheer. “I think this is a fresh take on the Christmas album,” says Tom. “Jazz fans and serious musicians will appreciate what we’ve done with theses tunes. Our arranger John Oddo has a true affinity for that classic 50s and 60s sound. He really nails it. Tedd Firth is a major talent and a creative voice. And, of course, I love singing with John Schneider. The timbre of our voices match, the harmonies blend so easily. Plus, he’s a barrel of laughs.” Schneider adds, “Tom and I really bring out the best in each other. We may not sound alike when we talk, but when we sing sometimes you can’t tell us apart. In the studio, I put him first and he puts me first. If that’s not friendship, I don’t know what is.”

Dhonna Goodale Takes Children, Teens from Shelters and Foster Care
on Annual Shopping Spree; Remembers Being ‘That Kid’

Dhonna Goodale Get's A Hug

The Children With Santa

Philanthropist-actress-reality show star Dhonna Goodale helped ensure that homeless and foster children in Riverhead and surrounding areas had a delightful Christmas. The Flanders resident and her family headed up a Christmas Eve shopping excursion to Kmart in Riverhead on Monday, where they outfitted 22 Riverhead-area children from head to toe and purchased toys of their choice.

Goodale, who was recently seen showing off her holiday decorating talents on the TLC reality show special Four Houses: Deck the Halls, has been taking children on holiday shopping sprees and otherwise helping less fortunate young people all of her adult life.

“We were taught to serve others,” said Goodale, who together with her husband Bobby Goodale is passing on the tradition by involving her own sons, Jesse , 14, and Jared, 12, in the holiday gift-giving activities. “Earlier in life I was that kid—the one who went without—and I am living proof that with perseverance you can go from welfare to philanthropy. The thought behind this activity is that when much is given, much is expected and the reason for the season is that a child was born and died for us.”

Madame Paulette Cleaning Kit

It’s that time of year again for holiday parties! Not to worry, Madame Paulette® is here to help— with the Madame Paulette® Professional Stain Removal Kit for those emergency stains! Unlike conventional stain removers, Madame Paulette® has taken into account the two most important factors for safe and effective stain removal: time (the most important! The sooner the stain can be treated, the easier it is to remove) and stain identification (every stain has a different composition).

There are three special formulas: Special Formula 1 - Earth Based Stains: Fruit juices, teas, colas, liquors, etc. Special Formula 2 - Protein Based Stains: From the body and dairy products, such as blood, perspiration, milk, eggs, etc. Special Formula 3 - Oil Based Stains: From vegetable, mineral, or petroleum oils, such as baby oil, animal fat, salad dressing, mayonnaise, motor oil, grease, etc. A fourth packet contains three individual super absorbent cloths. Using this cloth under the stained area helps transfer stain matter through the fabric into the absorbent cloth. This makes the stain removal process even more effective! Story By: Kathy Posner

Presents Under Kathy Posner's Christmas Tree

According to Marilyn Vos Savant’s column in Parade Magazine, total consumer spending accounts for about 70% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This spending includes housing, transportation, food clothing, etc. In 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average household expenditure was approximately $50,486.

The National Retail Federation reports that consumers spent an average of $508 on holiday gifts last year. If we play with the numbers, that means that only .74% (¾ of one percent) of the economy is represented by holiday spending.

I am confused!

If holiday spending is such an infinitesimal part of the GDP, why does the media make such a big deal about Black Friday and holiday shopping expenditures? Why are every retailer’s cash register sales closely scrutinized, and online spending analyzed ad nauseum? The numbers prove that holiday spending has virtually no impact on our economy, yet the media wants us to believe otherwise. We are being “scared” into shopping, afraid if we don’t buy that extra teddy bear for little Jimmy’s stocking, the country’s economy will collapse.

We are bombarded with useless information. For example, a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey reports that with less than two weeks to go before Christmas Day, 60% of Americans have at least started their holiday shopping. Also, thirty-eight percent (38%) of adults say they have not yet started shopping. Just one-out-of-five Americans (21%) have finished their holiday shopping, while 75% still have shopping to do.

Oh, no! Seventy-five percent of people still have not done their holiday shopping!? These people are smart. The closer to Christmas that people wait, the better the bargains become. The smartest shopper does his holiday buying on January 2nd and saves the presents for the following Christmas.

The statistic that annoys me the most is the one that reports that, when they are out shopping, 72% of people prefer to see signs wishing them a “Merry Christmas” rather than ones that say "Happy Holidays." Why should it matter what a sign has printed on it? All that matters for this or for any season is that we are all healthy. Wealthy and wise wouldn’t hurt either!

James Edstrom's Note: I agree with these numbers. I also agree with the fact that you can find better deals other times of the year from retailers. I checked out Black Friday and Cyber Monday and found very little of any kind of deal. I see better offers during the winter time. Black Friday is a farce. I remember one year I went all the way to Brooklyn to Target for a great deal on a TV and they were out, even know I was there early. I grabbed some store manager and he said they only had 6 in stock of the sale item in the first place. It's all about getting you excited for nothing. They brainwash you and you think you are getting a deal.

Christmas In New York
