BERNADETTE PETERS TALKS ABOUT MARY TYLER MOORE

Mary Tyler Moore On 20 / 20

Famed Broadway star Bernadette Peters spoke fondly of her friend and “comedy genius” Mary Tyler Moore, who died this week at age 80.

“Mary will go down in the annals of comedy history as a genius comedy actor,” Peters told ABC News’ “20/20.” “She was an original... She came from a true place inside herself, which we all can relate to. She made us look at it in a different way, in a funny way.”

Moore, an Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actress, was best known for her roles in the TV sitcoms, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Moore earned six Emmy Awards, four of them for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." She won her first Emmy for her breakthrough role as Laura Petrie in "The Dick Van Dyke Show, and in 1993 she won her sixth for the television movie, "Stolen Babies."

Her portrayal of career woman Mary Richards in her namesake 1970s show arrived alongside the women's movement, making her a role model for generations of women, even though Moore didn't consider herself a feminist.

“She was actually one of the first to actually portray a modern woman on television, and she was one of the greats,” Peters said. “’The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ was a woman out in the world by herself making her way, being independent, being smart. So therefore, women everywhere looked up to her.”

Although she was best known for her television work, Moore also took on memorable film roles, including the 1990 movie, “The Last Best Year.” Peters, who starred alongside Moore in the film, recalled a moment when they were working on set together and had a funny exchange in the ladies room during a quick break from filming.

“I remember - we were washing our hands. All of a sudden she looked in the mirror and said, ‘You know the one great thing about growing older is you don’t have to shave your legs as much,’” Peters said, laughing. “And I just thought, ‘Oh Mary, you are really funny.’”

In addition to her work in film and television, Moore was known for her charity work with JDRF, formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which helps raise funds and awareness for Type 1 diabetes. Moore was diagnosed with the disease at age 33 and served as the foundation's international chairman.

Moore was also a longtime animal rights activist. In 1999, she and Peters co-founded Broadway Barks, a star-studded “adopt-a-thon” aimed at helping find permanent homes for cats and dogs in the New York city area. The event takes place every July.

“Her heart was bigger than anyone I’ve ever met, really,” Peters said. “She would like to be remembered as a humanitarian … she will be remembered as the comic genius that she was. She will be remembered as a huge, huge star in many areas on television and movies and stage. She’ll be remembered as a great beauty.”

BROADWAY'S MARVIN LAIRD & JOEL PALEY MARRIAGE

Marvin Laird With Bernadette Peters And Joel Paley

Longtime partners and the creators of the hit musical RUTHLESS!, Marvin Laird and Joel Paley, were married in a private ceremony on November 1st. It was truly a family affair with two of the producers, Maxine Paul and Evan Sacks, standing up for the resplendent grooms as maid of honor and best man respectively. The initial announcement of the nuptials occurred at the July 13th opening night of RUTHLESS! when Paley proposed to Laird while making a celebratory toast at the post-performance party. Sunday’s wedding was held at the beautiful home of the show’s third producer, Ken Schur, and his lovely and charming wife Janet. Attendees included Bernadette Peters, Lynn Cohen and members of the RUTHLESS! company.

With book & lyrics by Joel Paley and music by Marvin Laird, RUTHLESS! first appeared Off-Broadway 23 years ago at the Players Theatre, winning both the Drama Desk Award for Best Lyrics and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. Most notably, the production featured a few young girls in the role of Tina including Britney Spears, Natalie Portman and Laura Bell Bundy. The show continues to be a favorite among regional theaters and productions are continually being staged around the globe. Paley once again serves as director of the new production, with Laird on board as music supervisor as well.

When THE BAD SEED meets GYPSY, it’s fun for the whole dysfunctional family! Tina Denmark is a pretty, charming and diabolical eight-year-old who "was born to entertain." With the encouragement of slick and overbearing potential agent Sylvia St. Croix, Tina will do anything to play the lead in her school play. The question is, where does such remarkable talent and unstoppable ambition come from? The answer is shocking in this award-winning Stage Mother of all musicals.

Featured in the cast of RUTHLESS! are Kim Maresca (Westport’s TWELFTH NIGHT), Paul Pecorino (DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW), Rita McKenzie (ETHEL MERMAN’S BROADWAY, RUTHLESS! L.A.), Andrea McCullough (URINETOWN, GREASE), Jennifer Diamond (INTO THE WOODS, JEKYLL & HYDE), and introducing Tori Murray (Paper Mill’s NEW VOICES OF 2014: OH, WHAT A NIGHT!)

Author/lyricist/director Joel Paley was an original member of the notorious Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, dancing as Bertha Vinayshinski. This gig led him to Laird who was musical directing a Shirley MacLaine TV special featuring the "Trocks," prior to their sold-out Broadway engagement at the Palace Theatre.

Composer Marvin Laird has written dance and vocal arrangements for over two dozen Broadway and West End shows, including the award-winning production of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and the 2003 Broadway revival of GYPSY, both starring Bernadette Peters. He has been Ms. Peters’ personal music director for more than 40 years.

The playing schedule for RUTHLESS! is Mondays and Fridays at 8 PM and Saturdays at 2 PM at St. Luke’s Theatre, 308 West 46 Street (just west of Eighth Ave.) Tickets are available through www.RuthlessTheMusical.com or by calling 212-239-6200.
