Ronald O. Perelman hosted The Apollo Theater’s 7th Annual Apollo in the Hamptons benefit on Saturday, August 20th at his residence in The Creeks of East Hampton, NY. The star-studded event included special performances by Lionel Ritchie, Jon Bon Jovi, The Roots, Joe Walsh, Pharrell Williams, Gwen Stefani – featuring a duet with Blake Shelton, Usher, Ciara and Kimberly Nichole of The Voice. Political figures, celebrities and Hamptons socialites enjoyed the spectacular evening of dinner and dancing in support of The Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY.

Budding philanthropist and teen It Girl, Maya Henry, accompanied by parents Thomas J. Henry and Azteca Henry, was among the many distinguished guests at the Apollo in the Hamptons benefit. Henry’s philanthropic interest to help children in need aligns with The Apollo Theaters’ art education initiative to build school programs that enhance the community. Henry has supported numerous charities aiding children in her hometown of San Antonio, TX, and in 2010, launched Maya’s Corner to support causes benefitting our nation’s youth.

The 7th Annual Apollo in the Hamptons raised $5 million thanks to co-hosts, Dick Parsons, Robert Kraft and Jon Bon Jovi, and those who attended. Notable attendees included: Ronald O. Superstars Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson will be inducted into the Apollo Theater’s Hall of Fame in New York City. The late King of Pop and the Queen of Soul will be named Apollo Legends at their gala on June 14th. Jackson launched his career with the Jackson 5 at the Apollo’s Amateur Night in the late 1960s. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony will also be honored at the star studded event for their humanitarian work.

On September 29th, the Japanese queen of R&B, Akiko Wada, will perform in New York for the first time to celebrate the 40th anniversary since her debut as an artist. Akiko Wada decided to celebrate with a performance at the renowned Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York due to its history of presenting R&B favorites including, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson and Aretha Franklin, with whom Ms. Wada is often compared.The performance will include special guest and legendary soul icon, Sam Moore, who is the famous voice behind the well known soulful, hit song “Soul Man”. This is a happy reunion for Akiko Wada and Sam Moore since they have performed on stage together. The duo first performed together on Japanese Television early in Akiko Wada’s career and at the time of Sam Moore’s rise to fame as lead vocalist of Sam & Dave.The band, The Wild Women will be opening the show and The Bronx Mass Choir will be performing as back-up for Akiko Wada throughout the performance. Ticket prices range from $53.50 to $83.50 and are available both at and at the Apollo Theater box office. Akiko Wada was born in Osaka, Japan and debuted as a singer in 1968 with the single, “Hoshizora no Kodoku”. In 1970, she made her first appearance on “Kohaku Uta-gassen,” the year end Grand Song Festival, that is perhaps the most prestigious concert in Japan. Since then, she has appeared on the bill for a considerable total of 31 times. Akiko Wada holds several impressive accolades to her name, including, her win for the Japan Record Award of the Year for “Best Singer of the Year”, the release of 33 albums and 82 singles, the release of her book titled “Otona-no-Shikari-kata (How to Firmly Guide the Younger Generation)”, which has sold 120,000 copies and her memorable 30th Anniversary Concert which co-starred Ray Charles in 1998.To indulge in a fun night of great music, go to the Apollo Theater to watch Akiko Wada and Sam Moore reunite!
