ADAM SANDLER CAN REST IN THE HAMPTON'S

THE HAMPTONS GOSSIP

Story By: Edward Callaghan

Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler can now take some time off and get some well deserved R & R at his Quogue summer home after the sweeping success of his latest comedic romp “Grownups” trounced the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz clunker, “Knight & Day”. Grownups scored over $41 million at the box office in North America. This weekend while “Knight & Day”’ pulled in a meager $27 million. You’ll probably find him celebrating with his family at their favorite lunch spot The Driver’s Seat in Southampton in the coming weeks.

Steven Spielberg

DreamWorks' co-founder Steven Spielberg is a happy man that he too can hit the beach in East Hampton. Now with over $800 million in privately procured financing in the bank and with the launch of six movies into production, the studio begins what can be termed its third life stage -- operating as a privately funded company. The famed producer-director and his new partner powerhouse Stacey Snider have reached a deal with Walt Disney Co, to distribute the live-action films of DreamWorks SKG. The studio had reportedly reached a distribution deal to have its films released by Universal Pictures, but that pact fell through last Friday according to the Wall Street Journal when the two sides could not agree on financial terms. DreamWorks SKG was created in 1994 by the entertainment triumvirate of Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Its films include "Saving Private Ryan," American Beauty," "Almost Famous" and "Catch Me If You Can”. Just a few days ago Spielberg announced the cast for his film version of the stage play “War Horse”, which will include Oscar-nominated actress Emily Watson and Jeremy Irvine who starred in the stage version in the lead role. War Horse, which tells the story of a horse caught up in the bloody violence of World War I, was originally a children's book written by Michael Morpurgo.

Denise Rich

The closing night party on Tuesday for artist Victor Matthews’ Alter Ego show at Joseph Manqueros’ prestigious Wendt Gallery looked more like an opening with champagne flowing copiously and a swarm of society and entertainment figures like socialite art collectors Denise Rich and Joyce Mullins Jackson (who co-hosted along with Andre Harrell, Ann Dexter-Jones, Serge Becker and Andre Balazs) making the scene. Perhaps it was because Matthews is such a favorite of the bold face set with his works hanging on the walls of homes owned by Jay Z, Lyor Cohen, Ron Perelman, Dick Parsons, Ian Schrager, Brian Grazer, Francesco Clemente and Vikram Chatwal and Russell Simmons. Or maybe it was because Simmons, a longtime patron of the gallery and big fan of Matthews, was filming a segment for his new autobiographical reality show. Never mind, the social swans swooned around the room striking a pose each time the cameras panned the crowd.

Joe Biden

Parishioners at the majestic Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary in Southampton are accustomed to celebrities. Over the years, there have been a number of Kennedy weddings and Gary Cooper was once a parishioner. Two weeks ago, Vice President Joe Biden was seen partaking – with a cadre of Secret Service – in the Sunday services.

Jill Zarin

Bravo VP Andy Cohen of “Real Housewives” fame – or infamy depending on your taste - is quite upset that a Buddha statue given to him as a birthday present was stolen from his waterfront deck in Sag Harbor. Cohen reminds the thief that "it's bad karma to steal religious iconography", Real LI notes. Maybe he should get Danielle from R H New Jersey or Jill Zarin of the New York contingent to hang around his property – they would frighten anyone off.

Chris Cuomo

Last week however they were surprised to see a new but somewhat familiar face on the altar saying the Mass. They soon learned it was TV personality Father Edward L. Beck, who marked the 25th anniversary of his ordination as a Passionist priest with a special mass con celebrated with three other priests from his order at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton last week. The author of three best-selling books, Fr. Beck is the executive producer of the nationally broadcast television show “Sunday Mass”, as well as the host of the ABC television show, “All Together Now” on the ABC News Now network. He also teams with Southampton’s Chris Cuomo of ABC News for “Focus on Faith” for Good Morning America Now. In addition, he is a writer and developer of mainstream television and film projects. Following Mass, Chris Cuomo and his wife Cristina Greeven Cuomo hosted a reception for Fr. Beck and his family and friends at their Southampton Village home.

Though we confess to favor J. McLaughlin and Vineyard Vines for our summer threads, we were pleasantly surprised to see the return of Jesse Warren who operated the very hip Williamsburg-ish men’s store TBD on Jobs Lane last year. Jesse’s moved up to Main Street with a new name – Tenet – and new partners his brother Josh and Gregory Buntain. The vibe is fresh - still city hipster but with a little nod to country chic. The trio took over the BookHampton store when the bookstore moved into the space next door.

My friends, husband and wife artists, Rosalind Brenner and Michael Cardacino have been hit hard – like all of us - by the recession. But Michael and Rosalind have figured out a way to bring in some extra cash – taking in lodgers for overnight stays. Heck, when you have a 12,000 square foot home, with a 60 foot pool, hot tub and a private gym, why not! I understand that there guests are coming from as far away as Europe and as close as Manhattan. They call it quite rightly the Art House of East Hampton as it also boasts an art studio.

One of my favorite restaurateurs Beppe Desiderio who ran the popular Rubi Red some years ago and put on his chef toque for a season at Grappa where he served up the most mouthwatering small plates of meatballs and boccancini recently took over the old Spinnakers in Sag Harbor and transformed it into Blue Skys a treasure for lovers of Mediterranean cuisine.
