Katy Perry

For the first time since its creation, music industry elite took to the red carpet on Sunday, August 25th at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn for MTV’s Video Music Awards. Besides remarkable designer dresses and other fashion statements, bold brows were the talk of the red carpet. Celebrity eyebrow stylist Joey Healy selected the best brows of the evening and brows that can use a little shaping up, and shares a few tips on how to get or fix each look.

The Winners

Katy Perry

Katy Perry always rocks a roaring bold brow, but her VMA brows were her best yet! Katy has evolved from a pinup brow to a more natural feminine version. Where there is still nothing understated about Katy Perry, her brows are now flattering her facial features in a more grown up way. With her signature defined arch and deep color, Katy’s brows did not appear too filled in or overdone but were right on the mark.

Get the Look

To copy Katy Perry’s red carpet brow I would recommend using a waterproof brow powder (like The Joey Healy Collection Luxe Brow Powder in Tobacco, available at www.joeyhealy.com) to really highlight and enhance the existing shape. If your brows are not quite as naturally lush as Katy’s, I would recommend using a brow serum (like The Joey Healy Collection Brow Renovation Serum) to achieve maximum fullness within 4-6 weeks.

Ciara

A welcome departure from her tomboy street style, Ciara looked devastatingly chic with thick, natural brows as her best red carpet accessory. This bold brow flattered her rich skin tone and was properly impactful for her overall beauty look. With a soft makeup choice and underworked hair, this songbird looked her award show best.

Get the Look

To get Ciara’s award show arches I would recommend using a deep brunette toned brow pencil (like The Joey Healy Collection Architect Stylo in Molasses, available at www.joeyhealy.com) along with a non-crunchy brow gel (like The Joey Healy Collection Brow Structure Clear Set) to ensure your brows stay in place.

Taylor Swift

 Taylor Swift

To describe Taylor Swift’s award show look in one word: breathtaking. Just like her perfectly curled up-do and her bold jewelry choices, Taylor’s eyebrows played a crucial role in pulling the look together. Her sandy taupe brows appeared soft and struck a harmonious balance to her look while working with her bright red lipstick and dangling earrings. By creating a brow that was not quite as front and center and loud, Taylor was able to draw attention to her flattering facial features and the overall impact of her look.

Get the Look

For blondes like Taylor looking for an understated brow, I would recommend a softer shade of a brow pencil (like The Joey Healy Collection Architect Stylo in Wicker) for a show stopping finish.

Brows That Missed the Mark

Lady Gaga

I love that Lady Gaga got back to her natural roots and sported her neo-goth dark hair on the red carpet in Brooklyn. That being said, Mother Monster fell short by neglecting to pay attention to her brows as well. Her red carpet brows appeared particularly light and barely visible.

Fix the Look

To darken her brows to better complement her new raven locks, Gaga should have opted for a brow powder (like The Joey Healy Collection Luxe Brow Powder in Raven) would have really brought out the cool undertones in her arches. As a rule of thumb, it is always good to remember that brows can always be made darker when sporting lighter hair, but have brows that are too light with dark hair really takes away from many other unique facial features and does not flatter the bone structure appropriately.

Selena Gomez

 Selena Gomez

Where were Selena’s bold brows from her Come and Get It music video last night? Her VMA brows were lacking the full punch that they usually bring to her look. Selena worked a gorgeous Versace gown but her underworked hair and unfinished makeup took away from the ensemble. A bold brow would have been just the secret to pull this high-fashion look together. Due to a lack of shading, Selena’s brows seemed particularly sparse on top, and made them appear asymmetrical.

Fix the Look

To turn up the volume on a brow that is already well-shaped but lacks density, I would recommend using a brow powder (like The Joey Healy Collection Luxe Brow Powder in Tobacco, available at www.joeyhealy.com) to fill in the missing pieces. Because the brow is already shaped properly, Selena’s look was frustratingly close to perfection.

Miley Cyrus

Like any woman rocking short hair, the bar is raised for having full and perfect arches to flatter their facial shape. With her already short hair cropped even tighter, Miley missed the mark with brows that appeared asymmetrical and fell flat. Miley has a great starting point as the heads of her brows are phenomenal, but when it comes to the tails they seem to fizzle out.

Fix the Look

For anyone with short hair like Miley that’s lacking a thick brow or does not have the right brow for their facial shape, I would recommend a brow serum (like The Joey Healy Collection Brow Renovation Serum) to further grow out the tails of the brow so that they can later be reshaped. When it comes time for reshaping, be sure to use a precise tweezer (like The Joey Healy Collection Elite Sculpting Tweezer) for best results when redefining your brow.
