OMG! MY PARENTS ARE GETTING OLD RESOURCE

READING FOR BABY BOOMERS
****

OMG MY PARENTS ARE GETTING OLD

With over 72 million ‘baby boomers’ currently in America, this means many families are, or will be, facing the administration of a parent’s care.

When the dust settled after two horrifically intense years of managing her mother’s care, caregivers, and finances, Faye Levow was determined to create a comprehensive resource so that no one would ever again be lost in the whirlwind of dealing with unprepared, aging parents. Her upcoming book, OMG! My Parents Are Getting OLD! (Launch Pad Publishing Inc.) is the successful result of that determination.

OMG! My Parents Are Getting OLD! is THE definitive resource for families forced to deal with the mountain of information and red tape that faces them. With over 44 million family caregivers caring for aging family members in our society today, it’s a given that there is a tremendous need for such a resource. The practical yet priceless information in this book will make the transition easier and less complicated for both seniors and younger family members.

An in-demand speaker, Levow emphasizes the importance of being prepared for the time when one’s faculties are no longer as sharp and one’s body requires more care and assistance. “The worst of everything that happens is because people are not prepared. They have been in denial and that hurts everyone,” she says.

Full of 20/20 hindsight for family members and parents, this book has the most comprehensive resource section (fully indexed) of any book in its category, with readable chapters containing expertise from over fifty professionals who work with seniors on a daily basis in everything from finance, probate, senior living, insurance, veterans benefits, dementia, medical care, locating caregivers, hospice, funerals, and much more. Levow shares dramatic, true stories of caregivers, theft, finances, and family gone awry from more than seventy family caregivers who have actually ‘been there and done it.’

TIME WARNER LETS DOWN NEW YORK CITY

****
YOU CAN'T COUNT ON TIME WARNER
CABLE NYC IN A EMERGENCY
****

Time Warner Cable Lets Customers Down During Storm

Well, it's right in the middle of a hurricane and Time Warner cable is out. Considering that most of New York City's cables are underground, this is not right.

From speaking to customer representatives, I have a strange feeling that they cut out the service on purpose, to save their equipment like the MTA. This in a time of a emergency, is unthinkable.  If you lose some equipment in a emergency to keep your customers informed to what is happening in the city, then you are doing your job. To keep New Yorkers in the dark at the sake of saving some equipment, just really sucks.

As a new Times Warner customer for only two weeks, already it is time to look for a new company that I can count on in case of emergency.

Time Warner let New Yorkers down!

Theresa will give interactive readings to audience members throughout the show and will also share personal stories about her life and her unique gifts. Tickets are on-sale now at ticketmaster.com, 1.800.745.3000, or the Tropicana Box Office and are $69.75/$79.75/$89.75/$99.75 plus applicable service charges. Long Island Medium began its third season on TLC September 9th. The show follows Theresa’s life as a typical Long Island wife and mom, except for one distinct difference…her ability to communicate with the dead. Since she cannot “turn off” this gift, messages can come through at any time and the local car mechanic, manicurist or cashier at the bagel shop may find themselves receiving a spontaneous reading from Theresa as she goes about her daily life. The show also covers how Theresa copes with the special challenges that her unique abilities create for her husband of 22 years, Larry, and her two children, aged 17 and 21.

Theresa has been a practicing medium for 10 years and is a certified medium with the Forever-Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to connecting science with the afterlife. She helps individuals find closure by connecting them with their departed loved ones. For Theresa, this is not just her job... this is her life.

HOW TO STAY IN SHAPE LIKE THE SATURDAYS

****
FITNESS WITH THE SATURDAYS
****

The Saturdays

Have you ever wondered how pop stars stay in shape? Don’t worry it’s not as hard as it may seem, because, guess what -- they’re just like us!

Multi-platinum-selling UK girl group, The Saturdays, (who are recording their fourth album in the US), have less than traditional methods when it comes to staying in shape. When you have 11 top ten singles and three top ten albums, you must be doing something right!

For starters, the girls are all dog-crazy. With 10 dogs in total between the five girls, you can imagine how many times a day they’re taking their beloved pooches for a brisk stroll down Hollywood Blvd or a quick jog down the boardwalk. As Frankie would say, 'pugs not drugs!'

The Saturdays Vanessa, Una, Rochelle, Mollie And Frankie

The girls sneak as much cardio into their daily lives as possible. While planning Rochelle’s wedding, the girls were spotted running all around London for the big day. From cake tastings (just one bite of course) to dress fittings, the girls were on the go go go! Thank god they had worked up the stamina to keep up with their pals, One Direction on the dance floor at the reception. "My wedding was the best day of my life. It was lovely all my friends and family there. Harry and Niall spent the night going crazy on the dance floor".

Una is the only one of The Saturdays who has a baby. You can imagine what it takes juggling being a first time mom and a working professional. Want to know why all the girls have great arms? They pass baby Aoife Belle around in between photo shoots and she is always in someone’s arms. “Aoife has been loving life in LA so far, she's already a Beverley Hills fashionista" -Una

With Mollie being the world’s #1 Britney Spears fan, the girls are constantly dancing through fittings and in between recording sessions. "I've been to see all of Britney's tours and it's always been my dream to meet her. She's been amazing on the X Factor USA – I've been watching every week while we've been over here in America" -Mollie

Over the weekend the girls were spotted getting their Zen on as they were captured attempting warrior pose. Escaping for an hour to the Westside, the girls were able to finally slow down from their busy lives and just breathe!

So see?! Even if your day is as jam packed as The Saturdays, there is always a way to squeeze in a little exercise while spending quality time with your loved ones and breaking it down to Britney Spears.

NEW YORK CITY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

****
HURRICANE 2012 RESOURCES
****

Empty Grand Central Station Hurricane 2012

The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) recommends:

Establishing an evacuation plan.

Stocking up on supplies such as water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, and extra batteries.

Staying well informed of the latest conditions.

A guide for preparing a Go Bag can be found by visiting the OEM website for more information:

According to the NYC Hurricane Readiness Guide, here are the steps you should take to be prepared for a serious storm:

Have a Plan

Make sure your preparedness plan addresses how your special needs affect your ability to evacuate, shelter in place, and communicate with emergency workers. Arrange help from friends, family, or neighbors if you will need assistance with evacuation. Allow additional time and consider your transportation needs.

If You Have Pets

Make sure your disaster plan addresses what you will do with your pet if a hurricane requires you to leave your home.If you cannot shelter your pet at a kennel or with friends or relatives outside the evacuation area, pets are allowed at all City shelters. Please bring supplies to care for your pet, including food, leashes, a cage, and medication.

If You Live In a Basement

Basement apartment residents may face additional risks from hurricanes even if they live outside evacuation zone boundaries. Many areas of the city can experience rainfall flooding. If you live in a basement apartment, be prepared to take shelter above ground.

If You Live in a High-Rise Building

If you live in a high-rise building located in an evacuation zone, follow evacuation orders. If you live in a high-rise building, especially on the 10th floor or above, stay away from windows in case they break or shatter. Or, move to a lower floor.

Prepare a Disaster Plan

Develop a plan with your household members that outlines what to do, how to find each other, and how to communicate if a hurricane strikes New York.

Determine Whether You Live in an Evacuation Zone

Areas of the city subject to storm surge flooding are divided into three zones based on how storms of different strengths will affect them. Residents Zone A are currently under a mandatory evacuation order. Most East Side areas within the 26th District are not in Zone A, but parts of Downtown Manhattan and the West Side are. Use the Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder at www.NYC.gov/hurricanezones, call 311 (TTY: 212-504-4115), or consult the map provided in this brochure to find out if your address is located in an evacuation zone.

If you find yourself in an emergency do not hesitate to call 911. If you need more information, please call 311 (TTY: 212-504-4115).

During the storm, we urge people to stay out of parks and proceed with caution on tree-lined sidewalks in the event of falling trees or branches. To report downed trees or branches, please contact 311.

SOLUTIONS FOR JENNIFER ESPOSITO ILLNESS

CELEBRITY HEALTH TIPS
****

Jennifer Esposito

Sheryl Goldstein, author of The No Gluten Solution, Cooking For Family and Friends, says:

“It’s not in my nature to publicly question someone’s statement regarding health issues, but I can’t help but react to the recent press surrounding Jennifer Esposito. I, like Jennifer, have celiac disease and we know that a strict compliance to a gluten-free diet is the remedy.

After she collapsed on the TV set of Blue Bloods, she claimed that her condition was the cause. That she asked the producers to make schedule accommodations due to her disorder is in direct conflict with what she declares as her beliefs on her website, Jennifer’s Way.

Her tagline, “Learn to live again… gluten free” says to me that one can take control of his/her health through adherence to a gluten-free diet. She lives this life and her mission is to help others with celiac and gluten intolerance to do the same.

Jennifer clearly states that her health is ‘directly linked to what I’m eating and the nutrition I’m getting.’ She knows what needs to be done to maintain good health and shares this philosophy with the world. If she follows what she preaches, then there is no reason to use ‘her disease’ as an excuse for a reduced work schedule.”

JESSICA SIMPSON TALKS ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT

****
THE US WEEKLY ROUNDUP
****

US Weekly Cover

The cover story of the new issue of Us Weekly features Jessica Simpson’s honest account of losing her baby weight like the Average Joe-anne, pound by pound.

She’s not a size 0. Nor has she snapped back as quickly as some of her fellow first-time mommies (hi, Kristin Cavallari!). But the singer turned fashion mogul has lost nearly all of the 70 pounds she gained before giving birth to daughter Maxwell (with fiancé Eric Johnson, 33) on May 1. And Simpson — who has opened up about everything from her sex life to her bodily functions — has been refreshingly honest about her weight struggle. “It is definitely a challenge,” she said on Katie Couric’s talk show, Katie, in September. To meet it, the 5-foot-3 star, 32, has adhered to the Weight Watchers PointsPlus program and four-days-a-week training sessions. “I feel positive about how I’ve done so far and really good about the goals I have set,” the plan spokeswoman tells Us. And she’s not done yet. Says a source, “She’s still working toward a weight where she feels happiest and healthiest.”

As far as wedding plans go with fiancé and ex-NFL pro, Johnson, Simpson hasn’t said yes to a dress – or a wedding date! “She won’t set it until she has her body goals in sight,” a pal explains of the star’s upcoming nuptials.

EMILY’S ANGER, EX-FIANCE PLAYS DIRTY: MAYNARD FUMES AS JEF HOLM PEDDLES A TAWDRY TELL-ALL

Jef Holm is more interested in fame than being a stepfather. A source tells Hot Stuff his engagement to Bachelorette Emily Maynard (single mom to Ricki, 7) unraveled partially because Holm, 28, “was always choosing to go to Hollywood events, like Dancing With the Stars, instead of hanging out with Emily and her daughter.” But Holm saved his most offensive move for after the split. Maynard, 26, has learned he was shopping a tell-all to magazines. “Reporters were calling her, asking, ‘Will you comment on the story?’” says the source. “She was blindsided.” Unbelievably, however, the pair have not severed ties. They even reunited October 21 in Charlotte, North Carolina. “They are separating slowly for Ricki’s sake,” explains a second Maynard friend. “But they’re not getting back together.”

Ambien? A white-noise machine? That’s kid stuff for a sleepy Mariah Carey. The American Idol diva arranged an eight-hour rubdown while she got shut-eye at her L.A. mansion September 29. “The masseuse made $1,500,” a source tells Hot Stuff. Plus, Carey had a seriously kooky request: “She insisted Brüno play on repeat,” adds the insider. “It looped the entire time!”

PHOBOS: Mayan Fear

Back in July, physicists in Geneva announced the existence of the Higgs Boson, or ‘God particle,’ a subatomic particle thought to be the key to understanding the makeup of the universe. What these physicists forgot to mention is that smashing protons together at near-light speed using the Large Hadron Collider also produces a potentially planet-ending byproduct -- miniature black holes.

While CERN physicists contend that these black holes are too small to threaten the Earth, a new book just released by NY Times best-selling author Steve Alten links the Large Hadron Collider with two very real cataclysmic threats prophesied by the Mayan Calendar, with the doomsday event predicted for December 21st of this year.

Author Steve Alten consulted with physicists while researching his book, PHOBOS: Mayan Fear, which graphically details these two ticking time-bombs of Mother Nature. The first is a 3,000-foot-high mega-Tsunami originating from La Palma, one of the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. Scientists concur the threat detailed in the book is real and that the described mega-Tsunami would strike the east coast of the United States, leveling New York, Boston, and Miami.

Kirstie Alley
Rhea Perlman will reunite with longtime friend and former “Cheers” co-star Kirstie Alley in the pilot “Giant Baby,” it was announced today by Keith Cox, executive vice president, development and original programming, TV Land. Perlman will play Thelma, Maddie’s (Alley) long-suffering assistant and best friend, who encourages her boss to form a relationship with the son she gave up for adoption, Arlo (previously known as “Owen”). The network originally announced the Alley-headlined project as a presentation last month. “We’ve hit the jackpot getting Kirstie and Rhea back together,” said Cox. “It’s a dream to work with such talented comedic actors like these ladies and create a show for them that’s funny and has interesting characters – ‘Giant Baby’ hits all of those notes.”

“Giant Baby” revolves around Madison “Maddie” Banks, a Broadway star who finds her life turned upside down when Arlo, her long-lost son, turns up looking to connect after his adopted mother has died. However, Maddie doesn’t exactly see nerdy and schlubby Arlo fitting in with her luxurious lifestyle. When her attempt to change Arlo backfires, Maddie finds that perhaps they both could use a little change in their lives.

“Giant Baby” is written and executive produced by Marco Pennette and is also executive produced by Kirstie Alley and Jason Weinberg. Larry W. Jones and Keith Cox serve as executive producers for TV Land.

Over the past twenty-five years, the NYWF has invested $33 million in funding to over 280 women-led, nonprofit organizations, improving the lives of 5.4 million women and girls in New York City; 81% of those nonprofits have succeeded and are still thriving today. In 2009, the NYWF responded to the economic crisis by launching RISE-NYC!, a 5-year partnership initiative that increased its grant-making by more than 20% in focused areas including economic security, anti-violence and safety, and health and reproductive rights.
